I have read that Chris had been severely depressed and became a recluse early in life, and that's what I believe this song to be about, his depression. The first verse, which is in the past tense, talks about how he believed he had nothing to offer, how hard his life had been, and that he was directionless and alone. Then, in the last line, which changes the song to present tense, he explains he's sick of being depressed and is leaving it behind. The chorus is his "Emancipation Proclamation" where he declares to his depression that he's sick of it controlling him. He realizes he is in charge his life instead of his depression, that it resides in him, not him in it. For the second verse, I'm not quite sure of the line "Friends and liars don’t wait for me." It's written as a command... "freinds and liars" may represent his depression, and he's telling it not to wait for him, because he won't return... Anyway, I do understand the rest, he talks about how even though he has overcome his depression and has put "millions of miles" between them, he still feels it lurking close by. That's my interpretaion :D This song is beautiful and well written, and Chris does it justice with his powerful and raw voice. I would be happy to hear anyone's thoughts on the "Friends and Liars" line, it's still not quite clear to me. Thanks for reading - Brandon. |
