I love this song, the lyrics and the effect it has on you is totally amazing, stirring, haunting. The line "when you reach the part the heart ache come, the hero would be me - but heroes often fail" is so revealing, so true. I really love Gordon Lightfoot's version, but when I heard Johnny Cash sing it (on his last recording, American V: A Hundred Highways) i was stunned. His voice was kinda broken, but you also believed him and you believed what he sang. His version is full of honesty and pain. I love it. |
