Rolling Stones interview with Chris Martin: Rolling Stone: In your first single, Violet Hill, you sing about a fox becoming God and a 'carnoval of idiots on show', was the song inspired by Fox News? Chris Martin: No one's got that before, no one in the band, no one. The first line in that song is the first line of any song we ever wrote. Years ago when Guy (Berryman, the bassist) heard that first line and that first melody - 'It was a long and dark december' - he said, 'OK, I'll join the band.' But we didn't have the other 49 lines until last year. And then one day I was watching Bill O'Reilly (Fox News' Political Commentator) and I was like 'I know how to finish that song' My best friend, Tim, he's in a band called High Wire, but he also has to work in a bar. He was having trouble with his boss, and it made me think that so many people spend their lives being told what to do by people they don't like. So it was that idea, and watching Bill O'Reilly, and all these words just came out. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ The song's obviously about Fox News' coverage of a certain political situation and Chris' unhappiness that people spend all of their time being bossed around. It's FOX not FOG. Fantastic song, the end is the best part, I'd say. |

| This song is one of my favorite KoL songs. It's about Jared, the youngest member of the band who was only 18 when KoL became famous and how he struggled to cope with the fame. It's obvious that he didn't want to do interviews, didn't like being idolized, preferred to drink and smoke etc, but it's a brilliant song and it seems very sincere from Caleb's point of view. | |

I think it's about a guy who has NO confidence AND is too old for the girl. She was sixteen and six feet tall in a crowd of teenagers comin' out of the zoo She stumbled started to slip and fall teeter-tottered on the top of patent leather shoes I happened to catch her and said, "maybe these ruby shoes are a little cumbersome for you" She's 16, he met her at the Zoo with a group of teenagers, he's def not a teen. He meets her when she falls and they get to talking. But not as shaky as I must have seemed talkin' junk through her giggle -- little teenage dream And on the phone I could not compete my dumb-love fake competence was getting weak For a sec' I thought I sounded sweet but sure 'nough in a gruff, faint voice I heard myself speak I think what's happening here is that she's falling for him but he can't do it because he's no confidence and she's too young, *giggle little teenage dream* The rest is following the same vein but I'm pretty sure thats what it is. |

When I first heard it I thought it might have been about Gloria, whose grave I think they're visiting on the back of the album. Gloria was a good friend of theirs who died of cancer and the song Venice Queen is about her too so I assumed it was about her. This is my interpretation: I got dosed by you and Closer than most to you and What am I supposed to do (He loved her because she was such a beautiful person and he deeply cared for her, but he couldn't stop her dying) Take it away I never had it anyway Take it away and everything will be okay (I think this is AK saying he couldn't control her dying, and there's nothing he could have done, but once she's gone, he knows she'll be in peace and everything will be okay) In you a star is born and You cut a perfect form and Someone forever warm (Again, singing about how beautiful a person she was, and how she was always nice) Lay on lay on lay on lay on Lay on lay on lay on lay on (I'm not familiar with this term but I take it to mean, Rest In Peace, basically) Way upon the mountain where she died All I ever wanted was your life Deep inside the canyon I can't hide All I ever wanted was your life (Again, all he wanted was for her to live and beat cancer and he can't hide from the fact that she never survived, the canyon could mean where he lives, which is in some canyon or valley in LA, at that time anyway) Show love with no remorse and Climb on to your seahorse and This ride is right on corse (This is him telling her to show no remorse about her life, love everything as she always had done before, 'this ride is right on course' means that it's gonna happen, so let her last days be good) This is the way I wanted it to be with you This is the way that I knew that it would be with you (AK saying that he knew she would be full of love in her dying days as she was, he wanted it to be that way and he knew that she would be that way - full of love) The rest is just repeating itself over but thats what I think of it, I'm almost 100% sure it's about Gloria. I'm sure thats her grave they're looking at on the back of the album too. |
