| Scissor Sisters – Intermission Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Come on people, discussion! I have a feeling this song is primarily about death, and uses the metaphore of life being a stage production. "You were going on at half-past seven, now it's going on a quarter 'til nine. All the angels want to know: are you lost or treading water?" sounds to me like someone has managed to avoid their own death, and the angels in Heaven are wondering where the person is. "Happy yesterday to all. We were born to die". Happy yesterday because there our time has ended and there will be no tomorrow. "You fight for freedom from devotion, a battle that will always begin with somebody giving you a piece of advice: By the way you're livin' in sin" is clearly about religion and trying to live your life without it. Maintain atheism? There's more to say, but for now I must away! |

| Modest Mouse – History Sticks to Your Feet Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
A couple of points: "Like it was stated that we're walking Salt and coal" Salt = sodium chloride, which plays a major role in our central nervous system. Coal is formed by organic matter being compressed over millions of years. We're all walking organic matter made of carbon (see: Parting of the Sensory), and may one day end up as coal. "Plants solidify sunshine" Plants use the energy of sunlight to photosynthesize and manufacture organic molecules, which go on to be incorporated into all other life. "How this start, I don't know" I.e. life itself. "The sun's diary pulled up from deep canary holes And when we read it our skin it becomes warm" It used to be common practice to take canaries into mining tunnels as a safeguard against gas leaks (the canaries would pass out if oxygen began running low, before humans could detect it). The "sun's diary" is likely the organic matter generated by plants, which eventually becomes coal. Reading the diary = burning the coal to warm ourselves. "Well, the past only exist as tiny bricks we burn to release all it's memory" This seems to tie in with the theme of burning coal to release the trapped energy of sunlight and generate heat. We burn memories to relive the experiences and the life contained therein. Life and memories and history are all tied together in this song. The theme is carried on with the imagery of feet sticking to the floor and becoming part of history, and leaves transferring their memories through our feet. Animals eat leaves (see: Never ending maths equation) and we eat the animals, thus gaining the leaves' energy from the sun, and the life and history/memories that comes with it. |

| Serj Tankian – Honking Antelope Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I'm probably wrong, but I interpreted the 'honking antelopes' to be cars. At the beginning of the song Serj paints a picture of a more pristine pre-industrialised world, where people lived in small tribes rather than in huge metropolises. The line: "Indigenous traces, tribal chiefs" makes me think of this. At that time in history, mankind's habitat wasn't dotted with cars as it is now, but wild beasts such as antelope would have roamed the land. 'Honking antelope' could be a poetic way of showing what urbanisation and industrialisation have replaced. Instead of nature and wild animals we now have cars (honking). 'Honking' also hints at congestion and noise- negative things that he wishes could be 'healed with only a song'. |

| The Living End – Raise The Alarm Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Seems like Cheney's decide to tackle the age old religion question and has revealed himself to be on the atheist side of things. He defends atheism against the common argument levelled by religious folk that it breeds amorality- "I still have a heart", "it's what's inside that matters most". He seems to suggest that religion may be a form of self-delusion- "We choose what we see, And we see what we choose to believe" (people who decide to believe in religion will imagine 'proofs' of their beliefs). His only faith is in loving, hating, debating etc that go on in the world, and that they will continue to exist |

| Modest Mouse – Head South Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
kpt, I think bands' sound changing is a tricky topic. Obviously good bands will have something unique which is what endears them to us, and it's sad and shit when they lose that special something. At the same time, you can't expect or want them to just remain static and not develop at all. If a band intentionally decided to write more poppy music for monetary reasons then I agree that we should scorn such a move, but the tricky thing is discerning whether or not this is the situation. In the case of Modest Mouse, I think it's more likely just a reflection of Isaac's changing world view. If you look at his early career, he's driving round the PNW, he's living in a flooded house with his parents divorced, he's questioning the point of his existence. These emotions are reflected in the rough emotional early music. In later albums though, it seems evident to me that his world view has changed. Lyrics from songs such as "Float On", "We've Got Everything" and "People as Places as People" really suggest to me that he's mellowed out a lot and moved to a state of being grateful for everything he's got and loving of the people around him. If you're not filled with doubt and longing it's ingenuous and fake to keep writing music as if you are, just to keep the original fans happy. Personally, I'm happy for Isaac if my interpretation's correct and he really has found himself at a good point in life. |

| NOFX – Linoleum Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
NoFX often changes their lyrics around, from CDs to live versions and even from the lyrics printed in the CD booklets to what is heard on the recordings. Eg. on "Anarchy Camp" there is a whole call and response section with the backing vocals never making it to the actual album, but I think it's worth seeing the printed lyrics even if they end up getting cut, because they can provide an insight into the song. I don't think the Kleenex necessarily denotes crying; it may just be representative of worthless crap being all he owns. I imagine checking in your pocket for some coins and only finding old tissues. "That's me inside your head", as well as the images of him being all these different people, suggests that his views exist in all of us, and are ubiquitous in society |

For anyone who doesn't speak french, here's a rough translation of the 4th verse: And the Jackalope said "I'd like to be a yeti To flee in the night And go far from here" But the yet said "I would like to be a sea monster So I could go on the sea With all the sharks" |

| Scissor Sisters – I Can't Decide Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Ok maybe I'm just being naive, but why is everyone insisting that the song HAS to be a girl? SO many songs are about a girl, but is it completely inconceivable that for once a band could be singing about something more interesting? I know that it's overly simple to just take lyrics literally, but there are only two lines in my opinion which sound like they could be about a girl at all: "I'm just a loner, baby" and also "Lock the doors and close the blinds We're going for a ride". Going for a ride could still be sinister and in the theme of driving somebody somewhere to kill them. If the guy in the song IS a gangster or pimp or something then using the word 'baby' isn't unusual at all, without it having to mean he likes some chick. I also first heard this on Dr Who, it was a brilliant choice for the scene :-D |

| Tiltmeter – 3:38AM Lyrics | 18 years ago |

wow, why does nobody know this song? It's really catchy. Anyway I wondered for AGES what this was about and eventually I asked Andy. He told me it was about one night at 3.38am when he was at his grandma's house and she was sick and all these people he didn't know kept dropping in on her and he was just trying to keep out of the way... |

| CKY – Frenetic Amnesic Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Yeah CharCoal69, I was going to say it reminded me of that movie specifically! I think it's not a totally new theme, im sure I've seen other movies where people lose their memories and get them back slowly to find out the truth. It definitely sounds like it's literally about amnesia | |
