Well, like some other here said, from the first time I heard this, I thought like Kurt was singing as if he was a baby inside his mother’s womb trying to set back his birth and stay in that place forever. It came to me as a shocking brainwave. To this end: “Hey, wait, I got a new complain…” Like… “wait, I don’t want to be born yet!” I see the rest of the chorus doesn’t fit much :) but, hey… this is just my personal view, nobody knows FOR SURE what all the lines are about. Probably other themes and references are mixed here. Then “I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for a week” ok, “week” could be just symbolic “I was drawn into your magnet tar pit trap” --> clear “I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black” --> dunno, but suggestive line All the second part could explain the reason why he desires to have never be born: “Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet. Cut myself on angel hair and baby's breath. Broken hymen of your highness i'm left black. Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back.” The last line turns back to the baby’s point of view, who declares his final will. Just think about Kurt Cobain’s hard and screwed up life, and his obsession for women’s “anatomy and phisiology” and this wont sound so strange to you. At least, this seemed to fit well to that “1993 context” and to the album context itself. (see the references in album’s title, song’s title, all the diffused sense of powerlessness and surrender of the album etc) I found it to be absolutly smart and odd as well. Now I see there are lots of different opinions, that’s interesting. Probably the reference to the relashionship with Love is the most offhand. Anyway, I like to think Kurt to have written something more amazing, that would catch anyone unprepared. A genius, anyway. PS. Anybody of you have read something about the reason why they chose that final album’s title? |
