This is an answer to the question charibari presented.. this song is (stated before)about how we will never truley understand our lives, or ourselves for that matter. We're all going to die eventually and our spirits are going to end up in the same place no matter how far we succeed in life. So my question to all of you is: why do we still try when we know this is true? WHy do we continue to do so much when all we do will be forgotten when the world ends? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Think how you personally would want to live your life.. Would you want to be remembered when you leave this life and continue to the next? Personally I would love to be remembered. Life is hard.. I think that's a well known fact. To 'succeed' means to struggle and 'do so much.' Sure we're all going to die, but yet don't you care enough about the life you've been given to make full use of it? Situation: I'm going to die in 60 years... this friend of mine will die in 20.. eh who cares? we're all going to die and i'll see him in 60 years, so why bother making this world a better place or enjoy the time with him now? I'll just sulk in my laziness. My question to you is: Why is it human nature to seek excuses to justify our laziness? I don't know if that made any sense to you all.. good luck |

| Elliott Smith – Between the Bars Lyrics | 19 years ago |

This was a great song either way. I think it was about him and another person. They are either in a relationhip or he is willing to help them with their problems. He is definately talking about alcohol when he's saying 'drink up baby.' This person isn't seeing their own potential because they're only condeming themselves. 'People you've been before that you don't want around anymore that push and shove and won't bend to your will.' What a great lyric. I think this person is having trouble being themself. They may not have a chance to find out either because the people they've tried to be keep pushing their ways back into this person's life. Maybe through people the person met, and they think they are the same as before. Then elliot talks drinking again with this person. He says that he'll kiss you again between the bars. The bars that this person most likely has built around themself. With their arms in the air waiting to be caught. They're waiting to be saved by someone or something. Not trying to get out on their own. Later elliot talks about keeping them in his heart seperate from the rest. I think that has to do with loving them in a place where he can't judge them... A place where he likes them the best. A place where all the pressures of society don't affect either of them. A place where the person can forget what the used to be and just be with him. Where he can keep what they forgot. A great song. This can be interperated many ways also. |

It really isn't about drugs. 'They want you or they don't' I think they say yes part of it is him hoping the girl he's seeing will say yes. |
