yea.. i'm sure someone has said something already along these lines.. but for me, this is a sad song about a piano man who is very talented, but is playing in a bar full of people who are trying to forget about their lives. "'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see To forget about life for a while" To set the scene: The piano man, plays in a bar... and he sings about the people he sees: the old man reminiscing, the bartender working his life away, the businessmen getting drunk, the waitress practicing politics (yet she is still working at a bar), the novelist who can't get time for a wife, the guy in the navy who will always be... all sad stories.. and the piano man who fills the bar with people who come to watch him so they can escape their sad lives... "And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"" I find the song sad and sorrowful... but i love listening to it. Billy joel was very talented to have written this. Well i could be wrong, but this is how i think when i'm listening to it... |
