Boards of Canada – Gyroscope Lyrics 19 years ago
The sample of the boy reading numbers is a recording from a number station--a transmission of numbers, tones, and letters broadcast sometimes on shortwave radios. Supposedly, spies use them to share information and they grew most popular during the Cold War.

Aimee Mann – Invisible Ink Lyrics 19 years ago
This does sort of sound like a song written about her fans but the line, "I feel like a ghost who's trying to move your hands over some ouija board in the hopes I can spell out my name" seems way too personal for that. When I think of Ouija boards, I think of an experience between people that are very close, even if it's just playing for fun--that's not something you would write about in reference to people you don't know.

Pavement – You Are A Light Lyrics 19 years ago
Why do people keep passing around these incorrect lyrics? I have no idea what that last verse is but anywhere you look on the Internet, all you will find is this one transcription of the lyrics.

Travis – Somewhere Else Lyrics 19 years ago
I see two different meanings to this song that I can't really decide which seems to be the right one.

First: how it is impossible to create a name for yourself in the world today because everyone else before you has already done it, seen it and then you die. "Come in knowing everything but don't say a word till they teach you the way" "And this'll turn into something else, something else, but when it does I'll be somewhere else."

And then the second is closer to shootingstar's idea--that when something is screwed up and you know there is no way to fix it without making it into something worse--nothing you do will have any impact.
