Correction: I'm sorry, but no matter how many times I hear this song I can't hear them saying "don't wanna fly". It definitely sounds like "don't wanna die." The lyrics also make a little bit of sense if you interpret them as being about God and death. |

| At their concert in Geneseo Andrew said this song was about being on acid and getting Gonorrhea. I'm not sure if he was kidding or if I was just way too drunk--but I'm 99% sure this was what he said. | |

I think it's about a couple losing their virginity together. Mostly because of this part: "But the night brought sparks, and the sparks brought flames, and you had to be sure, this wasn't one of those games. But I'm gonna show you, if you could just give me tonight." If you go into this song with that thought in mind you see that it explains almost every lyric in the song. |

"What can now be said Oh, little one on the other side Dance until the band stops playing Sing with all your might" Honestly, even if he's stated that the pregnancy results in a child I don't believe it at all just because of these four lines. Namely "on the other side". What is he speaking of? The other side of the vagina? That sounds a little graphic for the type of song and band it is. He's talking about DEATH! When people say, "the other side" (there may even have been a TV show called that about death) without referring to a specific object, they mean death. Oh, but that doesn't make any sense. How can the baby sing and dance if he's dead? Okay, better question, how can the baby sing and dance if he's alive? It makes more sense for the baby to sing and dance if he's dead (sing and dance in heaven) than if he's alive. If that doesn't convince you, then surely this will: "Mistakes we knew we were making Mistakes we knew we were making Don't think about chances we're taking Don't think about rules we're breaking Mistakes we knew... The list goes on and on... (On and On) The list goes on and on... (The list goes) " Okay, so if we assume that they didn't abort the baby, then they finally made a good decision. Then why do we get such a negative ending? The line "the list goes on and on" implies that they kept making mistakes and screwing up. It wasn't a mistake to keep the baby, it was a mistake to abort the baby! The ending makes absolutely no sense if they didn't get an abortion. I think the song has much darker meanings than anyone likes to admit--even the writer of the song. |

| By the way, I realize most people will disagree with me, and I even disagree with myself but not because of what the lyrics state. Rather because I interpret this song as being very objective which is something you cannot say for many Christians. Knowing this, I think it's most likely a harshly anti-abortion song that's about not getting the abortion, but for the life of me I cannot see that in the lyrics. | |

This song is possibly the easiest song I've ever seen to interpret. "We made plans to be unbreakable Love was all we knew No insurance for the unthinkable Blindly get us through We've been searching for a lifetime Short as it may seem Riding on the fumes that spark us While igniting dreams" So as all Christians do, they have pre-marital sex. Except since they're Christians, they don't use a condom (no insurance for the unthinkable). Christians obviously wouldn't have one ready, nor would they be on birth control. The fumes refer to endorphins, passion and all those other good things we all feel when we're in love--especially when that love is so good that with think they're the one (search for a lifetime). "Mistakes we knew we were making Mistakes we knew we were making Don't think about chances we're taking Mistakes we knew..." Obviously they knew they were doing something wrong when they had sex (at least according to their religion). They focused more on that rather than thinking about the chance they were taking not using a condom nor birth control. "Driving in the rain to the hospital Quiet aches in tense What at once just seemed the impossible Now makes perfect We held hands to face the uncomfortable Cold and lonely room Magazines and empty distractions Barely got us through" It's a very quiet ride to the hospital and a quiet, lonely wait for the doctor as they both worry that she might be pregnant. "And when we try To think of the life inside We found ourselves Looking at the world through new eyes" At this point they've both found out she's pregnant. "Looking through new eyes" refers to the fact that they've always seen abortion as being wrong, but now that they're in the situation they see it as the only way. "What can now be said Oh, little one on the other side Dance until the band stops playing Sing with all your might" This is after the abortion. "Little one the other side" obviously means the baby is dead. The last two lines are simply there to be poetic about death--almost seeming like their interpretations of what heaven would be like. "Mistakes we knew we were makin The list goes on and on... (On and On)" Indeed. This is the one place where the song seems anti-abortion (the rest seems pretty neutral). Basically it's saying the sex was a mistake, the lack of protection was a mistake, and most of all, the abortion was a huge mistake. I like the song very much because I think it definitely does have a message--maybe even of tolerance for abortion--but mainly that you should never choose abortion and it never crams it down your throat like so many artists do these days. |

This song is actually about the exact situation that I'm in right now with my ex-girlfriend. First I'll make a little summary for those who don't want to read a long post: I think the song is about a guy who got dumped and the girl who dumped him trying to get back with him even though she's lost her feelings for him. He hasn't lost his feelings, and he can't stand this situation. "She called last night still waiting for a reply. This static contact is pulling us apart. Please hang up on tight, I'll see you through the night." She calls me several times a week and I rarely call back because she dumped me and I'm trying to get away, but I'm also hoping that this will make her come back (covered later). I feel like when we hang out since we broke up and don't kiss or act like we're together (static contact) it's pulling us apart rather than helping us get back together. I dream about her almost every night which is what that last sentence is about. "You have me still be because I'm breathing, Although it has slowed down. Please don't cry because I'm leaving. I hope I see you soon." Right now I feel as long as I'm alive I'll love her, but already I don't love her as much as I once did. She's upset because I'm leaving her life, but I'm hoping she'll eventually want me back and we'll see each other again. "Exchange the sunshine for brown eyes and dark skies, Replace this dull life with you. I Know it's tomorrow, She's waiting for something to feel alive. " Eventually she breaks down and calls me, tells me she wants to get back together. I give in right away, we start hanging out, but things still aren't much better. She keeps telling me that maybe she'll start having "a spark" for me again, but right now she's not feeling much (she's waiting for something to feel alive). "You know me too well, She's sorry and I can tell. Scene missing, fade to black. You're acting all this out again," The reason she can't feel something for me is that she just knows me too well. She doesn't believe the promises I make and remembers all the horrible things I did to her when we were together. She's sorry that she still can't feel good about me, but she can't help it because she knows me so well. Another thing about my ex is that she's an actress. Like she actually acts on stage in plays--and she was a very good actress in the last month of our relationship when she'd decided she wanted to dump me (she acted like she still loved me). Once again, she began acting like she liked me a lot--even though she didn't. "Just wake me when it's over, When the curtains raise, It's time to move on. Exit now, credits rolling, The girl who stole my heart. The one that got away..." This last part is after she basically tells me she still isn't feeling anything which surprises me since we're doing so much better and even kissing again. But stupidly I'm still holding out hope that we'll be back together--but I hate going through this and I just wish I could go to sleep and not wake up until the end of the summer, when I'll finally know if she wants to be with me again or not (I'm not going to explain why I'll know by then). I know she won't love me again, and I know it'll be time to move on by then. I'm sure this isn't what they had in mind when they wrote this song, but I'm almost absolutely sure it was a very, very similar situation. Either way, it's what the song means to me and I'm surprised no one else came up with something similar. |
