Crystal Castles – Transgender Lyrics 9 years ago
@[arielpink:12631] I think it's about change, not death. It could also literally be about gender reassignment surgery.

MGMT – The Youth Lyrics 15 years ago
Honestly , when I first heard it I assumed that this song was ironic. "Cut a rug"? "Twist and shout"? Did no one else get the joke?

They're totally making fun of hippies and Generation X and Y's parents' generation, the boomers.

I mean it's a totally awesome song, but it makes me crack up.

Thom Yorke – The Eraser Lyrics 15 years ago
my interpretation: in a relationship, one is torn between the urge to be faithful and the need for freedom. "the eraser" in the song represents the instrument of detachment, with which one "erases" obligations, connections, memories, and facts; out of fear, for convenience, or selfishness. hence the more one tries to erase reality the more it comes rolling back in spite of it all. thom may be talking about an unfaithful, detached, or scatterbrained girlfriend, and sees shades of her weaknesses in himself too.

"i never gave you an encouragement" is particularly interesting. one tries to make themselves important to their significant other... maybe thom is regretting that he can be a detached, head-in-the-clouds person sometimes.

Sufjan Stevens – For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti Lyrics 19 years ago
this song makes me feel angry, because I think it is definitely about jesus, and that's what makes me so angry about it, because it's a gorgeous song that is so heartfelt, but the subject matter is just stomach-churning to me. it's so beautiful it makes you want to sing along. but I can't and probably shouldn't, because it's ridiculous. i think it's ridiculous that a man can have this kind of importance in a person's mind. how incredibly pompous of him, first of all, and how incredibly perverse and pitiful of the person. this only cements my love/hate relationship with the Sufjan. there is no need to personify universal love, which is what twists this song into something beautiful and sad in my mind.
