Pink Floyd – Paranoid Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about the soldier-come-teacher that this whole album seems themed around. He is having trouble coming to terms with the modern world. Being haunted by dreams of dying gunners and the like he turns to alcohol as a refuge. In the first verse he is remembering to keep a brave face, keep a stiff upper lip and don't show any weakness. In the second verse he is at the pub laughing it up with his mates. As for the pie in the sky in the third verse: that's not unlike "The American Dream" You will all be rich and famous. And he knows now that that will never happen. The last line: "...and you hide hide hide behind brown and mild eyes" refers to him turning to alcohol. Brown and mild is a style of ale in Britain.

Pink Floyd – The Gunner's Dream Lyrics 18 years ago
In a WW2 bomber, gunners rode in a pod like structure in the back of the plane, to fight of enemy fighters engaging from the rear. Unfortunately there was no way to eject from the gunner's pod. You could only get out once the plane was on the ground. If the plane was shot down and the gunner survived, he would be left with nothing but his thoughts as his crippled plane crashed to the ground.

In the first verse the teacher remembers hearing the transmission where the plane was shot down and the gunner's dying words on the intercom. Goodbye Max (his dog maybe?) Goodbye Ma. He remembers these words while he is at a memorial service with his wife.

In the second verse the teacher is commenting on how everything has gone to hell. The post war dream is over. There's war, fighting, IRA bombs blowing up innocent civilians. The freedoms they fought and died for are being squandered. This one gunner represents everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice in WW2 and the teacher's memory of his final words haunts him to this day.

The Cranberries – Dreams Lyrics 19 years ago
I just love the outro in this song. The dischordal harmony between the male and female vocalists.

Cat Stevens – Father And Son Lyrics 19 years ago
The background lyrics during the last verse of the song are as follows (in brackets) :

It's not time to make a change, (Away, away)
Just sit down, take it slowly. (Away)
You're still young, that's your fault, (I, Know)
There's so much you have to go through. (I have to make this)
Find a girl, settle down, (Decision)
if you want you can marry. (Alone)
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy. (No)

All the times that I cried, (Stay, stay)
keeping all the things I knew inside, (Stay)
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it. (Why, Must you go and make this)
If they were right, I'd agree, (Decision)
but it's them you know not me. (Alone)
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

To me I think this song is about a son arguing with his father over a decision he's about to make. That decision is joining the military. The father naturally wants his son to stay, telling him that he should just take his time and be like his dad, old and happy. But the son sees the only solution is to get away. He thinks his father never listens to him and now its his turn, his decision, his life.

Paul Simon – Graceland Lyrics 19 years ago
I saw a TV show with Paul Simon discussing this song. He was playing Graceland in several different keys, just to show how they can dramaticly change the mood of the song. He originaly sang it as "Wasteland" but then changed it to Graceland as it fit in better with the theme he was trying to present. Also, he lamented the line: "my traveling companions are ghosts and empty sockets, I'm looking at ghosts and empties" saying that he never really liked that part.

Gorillaz – Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head Lyrics 19 years ago
If you watch the DVD of their concert the last part of the song clearly sounds like: "Oh little town, you were saved, the time has come to see..." (the rest sounds about the same). But the album doesn't sound as distinct.

Also on "feel good inc" it sound like he says "I know you feel the stress it's apealing to me" instead of "now all you fill the streets..." even though it sounds nothing like that on the album.

Maybe I'm just hearing things. Has anyone else seen the concert DVD and noticed that?

Meat Loaf – Bat Out Of Hell Lyrics 19 years ago
Some time around 1993 my mom bought herself the album Bat Out Of Hell. I at 15 scoffed, "Meatloaf", ha, what kind of oldies crap is she gonna subject me to. I was nearly out of the house like a bat out of hell to escape the torture. But that Guitar... Oh my God that Guitar. The climax of the first guitar solo. I was hooked, from that day on I never regarded oldies the same way again; and My mom's cassette tape box never saw Bat Out Of Hell again. It was mine now.

My interpretation of this song is this: The narator is a born to be wild bad boy. He does what he wants and goes where he wants , when he wants. In a world that is full of filth and scum, this girl is the only thing thats pure and good and right. No matter what crap is around her she makes it beautiful. On one hand he is in love but on the other his heart wants to be free. He knows that when the morning comes he'll be gone. Maybe he wants to stay a bad boy or maybe he's afraid he'll corrupt this pure being but he always tries to get away. But every time he tries to leave, come the night time he is overcome and comes crawling back to her like a sinner before the gates of heaven. He tries one final time to get away . He hits the road an rides as fast as he can to get as far away from her as he can. But he can't get her out of his head. Distracted by his own thoughts he loses contrl of his bike and crashes. As he dies he "sees" his still beating heart flee its dead body and fly away. His heart remains free.

Leonard Cohen – The Future Lyrics 19 years ago
I first heard Leonard Cohen some time in the 90s. I was channel surfing and Much Music was playing this messed up music video with some old man singing in a gravely voice about "repenting". The lyrics were scrolling across the bottome of the screen. I tried to change the channel but I couldn't. I just kept flipping back to Leonard Cohen singing "The Future".

I think it's about a modern day prophet. Or just an ordinary Joe who can see the writing on the wall. All the evil from the past is nothing compared to what awaits us. "The blizzard of the world has crossed the threshold..." All the chaos and Godlessness (for lack of a better word) has finally reached it's breaking point and the soul will never be the same.

Pink Floyd – Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert Lyrics 19 years ago
Dubya took Afganistan,
and Olmert Took Beiruit...

"Maggie over lunch one day took a cruiser, with all hands..." In 1982 the UK sunk The ARA General Belgrano, an Argentine cruiser, during the Falkland War, resulting in significant loss of life and no shortage of controversy. Waters suggests that the order to sink the cruiser was given by Thatcher like she was simply picking up a magazine from the local store on her lunch break. No deep thought to the act, just another thing on her to-do list .
