| This song really is just amazing to me, something happened to me that feels just like this song. let meput a story with this song to make it make more sense..... this is a true story of a girl that touched and destroyed the hearts of 5 people including myself in the span of 2 years. She was dating my friend (we'll call him Rob) when i first met her, it was an online relationship and a few months went by and she disclosed not to rob but to me and myother friend (lets call him Chris) that the name she had given Rob was fake and she was not a 19 year old going into the military but instead was a 17 year old. when Rob found out he tried to cope with it but in the end he broke it off with her. However she had already planted the seed and began talking with me and Chris more seriously and at the same time she seduced both of us. I was the one knowing that she was with Chris as well...I know i was a terrible person and to make things worse i was cheating on my girlfriend as well who i was also in a long distance relationship with. after the whole mess that happened with that i couldnt stand doing it anymore after going to visit my girlfriend and becoming closer ( i now have moved out to be with my girlfriend who is now my fiance on the opposite side of the country) eventually her and Chris broke up although she painted a huge story to all of us that Chis was still after her when she was not wanting him to be but she had invited him all thewhile and was telling us all an elaborate story. Chris took a downward spiral and is now in prison for reasons i'd rather not even mention. she then moved on to my friend George (again not his real name of course) and they dated for a good 6 months and he let go of some of his base morals that he had always promised to keep until marriage all because she caught him in her web. all of us were brought in and our hearts broken...yes it definitely seems as though she's done this before....sorry for spilling out some personallife for you but this is the summary of the song as seen in our lives. | |

This song is simply amazing. And for that matter, bot of these albums are completely phenominal! both annorexia and nervosa deliver a full and deep spiritual journey whether you read along with the story or not. Showbread has always been one of the best bands when it comes to deep meaningful lyrics but they have outdone themselves beyond any imagining with every song on these albums. theyre growth both spiritually and musically is blindingly evident. as for the meaning of this song i'd rather just go to the meaning of the entire album. for those who do not know these albums are meant to be a musical accompaniment to the stories presented in the cd booklets. each cd is a story of one of two sisters who have two very different viewpoints and goals. annorexia dreams to escape all the evils of this world and so she builds a tower. Nervosa on the other hand wants to explore everything this world has to offer and chooses to dig a hole and immerse herself in the filth of this world so that she can find happiness. they both strive their whole lives for happiness, nervosa falling deeper into her hole of filth and depravity and annorexia continuing to build up what she feels is right. but all along they both were ignoring the one true thing that should have been the basis of their entire lives. and that was the little lamb...otherwise known as Jesus. these albums are simply beautiful and are so much more than i ever expected, though i expected it to be great, this blew my expectations out of the water. i pray that showbread keeps on playing deep and meaningful music for the glory of God. this song to me is not about a girl or other worldly relationship but instead the love of our eternal father. God is the only one that truly can guide us where we walk, and this song seems to me as a prayer asking for God to show him where to go but Gods answer is simply to wait. stay captive in this world until the time comes for me to bring you home. "heart that lingers i only move for you" God comes to those who wait, those who stay patient in their walk. God is always there leading us on but sometimes he tells us to stay put right where we are, and he will do the moving in our lives. sometimes we try too hard going out and searching for love, often finding it in all the wrong places such as the bottom of a bottle or in a stranger's bed. when if we stay calm and captive and simply wait that love of God will come to us. |

i agree abotu the first line meaning that he wants to have sex with her but she doesnt but to me it goes a bit deeper than that. the singer shows that he does fee somewhat bad for what he is doing in the line "quieted my conscience hoping you didnt see it, but i do i do i do" to me that line means he knows what he is doing is wrong however as in many situations though we know the right thing to do...we often do not do it. in the chorus he describes how much he has worked for getting "his" in the end, or in other words getting sex for all his romantic efforts because despite any reservations from beleifs he may have implied to in teh first verse are gone by the chorus as he is overcome by lust and the want...or need to have sex. i don't agree with the previous oppinions of the second verse however. i don't beleive he is saying that he is dumb for waiting or that she is dumb for wanting him to wait, however i beleive he is saying how dumb he is because he gave into the desires that he knew he shouldnt have and she is dumb for letting him go so far with it. which somewhat brings me back to the first verse and the line "we met in the courtyard where no one would notice, two kids contemplating all highschool has shown us". which by that line it is describing the feelings that many young teens have about sex, all that they learn from highschool is that it's perfectly fine, everyone does it why dont yousort of mentality. however christian beleifs greatly differ in this (sorry to be the one to bring the God topic in but lets not forget that Emery is christian based). the singer knows what he is doing is wrong but as with all sins it is hard to resist, and he wants it so badly that it becomes a need and no longer just a want. now coming to the line never gonna go away. this i beleive is not so much meaning the singer anymore but instead in reference to the action or the temptation of the action. because as many people know sex can e as addicting as drugs or alchohol, and lust can take over, and make us want it more and more to satisfy ourselves, but as the line says "I'm never satisfied" because really once you become addicted to something you can never be satisfied with just once more. you will always want more of it. as for the closing lines, "one by one side by side" this could either mean the singer will keep finding more lovers and commiting the same acts over and over again in a desperate need to feed his sexual appetite or in a more general sense applying to all people not just the main character of this song. because all people fall prey to lust, its one of the hardest to resist sins, i myself knwo that first hand as i am a christian and as many know it is against my beleifs to have premarital sex, but just because it is against my beleifs does not mean i will automatically deny that sin when it comes my way. no person is perfect, not christians not anyone, we all fall down at times. now i do not mean to be pushing my beleifs upon anyone else here. the meanings of most songs are left up to the interpereter. so its up to you what to beleive or not beleive. one last note i'd liek to add is that the entire album is filled with songs much liek this one that accentuate human frailties and places where we just give in to every sin that comes our way. the title of the album says is all "i'm only a man" which can easily be translated to "i'm only human" that theme appears in each of their songs on this album in one way or another and this one especially, playing off of the sin of lust and desire. |

here's my two cents on the matter: whether you personally like it or not, emery is a quote unquote christian band. they are christians and therefore live by chrisitan morals. though i agree with a later comment that is likely to come up from this "not all songs from a chrisitan artist are abotu God" however, you have to take into account that as christians, God is everything, and God is in everything. so though God may not be a main focus in each and every song, the underlying meaning will often have christian morals and subtle mentionings of God. that being said, i agree with Nothingtoknow911, i beleive that this man in the "story" (as all of the songs on this album are more detailed stories than songs) is christian and struggling with his own beleifs while his girlfriend is not a christian and is most likely taking part in actions that he would find immoral and wrong. the lines thatstrike out most to me are the interchanging lines "I'm trying my best not to say what you dont want to hear" and "i'm trying my best just to say what you don't want to hear". these lines portray a problem many chrisitians have. telling the ones most dear to them that they are walking down a path that will lead to only destruction. it's so hard to say these things and talk of God with them because you are close to them and do not want to say anything that would offend them, but it comes to a point where you have to say exactly what they dont want to hear whether they accept it or not you have to give it a shot. as the sng progresses he obviously has told her how he feels and her response was not of loving embrace but to tell him to leave. he never wanted to be the one to live a lie, which to live any other way than the way of God is a lie to chrisitans (just to clarify i am not saying any of us beleive we are perfect for being christian, but exactly the opposite, we knwo we do wrong but we try our best to right our own wrongs). in the end the two broke up and he is left knowing that he can no longer help her the way he intended. that is just my oppinion on the song, i tried my best to incorporate what i beleive the band members would also feel abotu the song, but in reality all i can do is speculate. though you may not agree with my interperetation that is only my oppinion based on my own beleifs and backgrounds. but we all have the freedom to form our own oppinions of songs and place oru own meanings on them as we please, especially with most songs from emery. as though I beleive God is in all of their songs, it is added in so subtly that even secular listeneners can enjoy it. well that's all i have to say about the song...may God bless you for all of your days. peace |

| i agree with many of the things said in the above comments but i'd like to add one point that i don't think anyone else mentioned. the line "please don't face the headlights of the oncoming cars alone" doesnt seem to me as a literal standin front of a car suicide plea...but instead metaphorical. the person in the song is going through a lot of issues in their life and whether they are contemplating suicide or did indeed commit suicide is uncertain though it is possible because of the line "i will let you go" but anyway i digress...back to the point, when he sings "don'te face the headlights of the oncoming cars alone" he is saying "don't face life alone because it is overwhelming and often frightening much like staring into the headlights of an oncoming car, but if we face this together we can make it through" | |

| to me this song is about a girl running from her problems in drugs and alchohol but i feel it goes a bit deeper than that. Emery being a christian band. the line "leave with me cause you could die tonight" could have a double meaning. not only could she literally drink herself to death, the more she shrinks and hides in the alchohol the further she slips from God and therefore is spiritually dying as well. as for the sound of this song, it does sound like a different direction for emery because in many of their songs they never had an actual chorus line, however this song goes by the usual song setup of verse, chorus verse, chorus, bridge, reprise, and then chorus again. so in that way yes...it is slightly unoriginal, but at the same time, their sound is in no way unoriginal, they still have the multivocal melodic screamo sound they had back in The Weak's End. the only difference is that it's a bit more refined. | |

Ok...first off i realize that my comment here is a little out of date seeing as the last comment was made a little less than a year ago but here it goes... the first line of the song is "on the way to pray" not grey. this symbolizes his making an effort to speak with God and spend time with God, which as many christians know is a very hard thing to do. There are times we go days or even weeks without praying and having that close relationship with God, and that's what this song is about. We often give excuses abotu praying like "i never have the time" and this is evident in the line "i was too busy to see you" which is an excuse we use all too often when there are many moments throughout the day that we are wasting away doing something frivolous when we could be communing with our Lord and savior As for those who do beleive this to be a song about a Boy/Girl relationship, every song can hae its own meaning to each individual person so if youw ould like to think of it as a male/female relationship then go ahead because for most of the song it fits And in response to Jonneh's comment. you have a valid point. Many christians do relate everythign to God, simply because God is in everything, i'm sorry if you feel this is "pushing our faith upon you" hen really we are simply expressing our own beleifs just as you did in your comment. as for the meaning of this song however, you can ask Emery themselves, who are devout followers of christ, about what this song means and they will tell you that it was intended for God, not for worldly ideas of just simple male and female relationships |

to me this song is directed not so much towards anyone else...but the person inside, that voice that tells us everythign we do is wrong, i beleive this song is takn from the christian view of separating from ourselves, because often all we do is hurt ourselves, in the same way, this song could be directed to the world as a whole, who beat down christians simply for beleiving and stating what they beleive, but really i'm not sure, it could be both or none of these things, that's for you to decide the lines "you love me you hate me" make me think more of an inward battle simple because that little thing inside of us that tells us we're wrong always says it knows best silently, by telling us it cares, and at the same time it hates us, then when it moves on and says "you can't have me anymore" it feels like a personal revelation that it can't controll you, that it's just a feeling and it couldnt exist without you, and in that way it can't have me anymore, i have gone through many personal struggles so this may just be my own feeling of the song, btu as always this is simply my oppinion, try and form yor own and jsut use mine as a guideline if anything at all |
