| Matt Hires – Out Of The Dark Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I really hate to post this as the first comment, but this song fit perfectly during tonight's episode of Grey's Anatomy... someone surrounded by death, violence, and negativity, lost in his intentions, confused by the environment in which he's found himself, wanting only to be with the one who brings him out of the dark and gives him clarity. Such a beautiful song. | |
| Newton Faulkner – Feels Like Home Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I agree that this song is about a breakup with imbalanced feelings.. I always got the vibe that he has some goal or vision in his mind that he needs to follow for himself, one that requires him to end the relationship, and he can only hope his partner will let him go accomplish that goal. In the end he wants to at least be friends ("All I wanna do is make it through to the other side") but he's really more happy for himself than anything that the relationship has ended (hence it "feels like home... I know I broke out.") LOVE this song! | |
| Kevin Devine – Murphy's Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
actually, "whimpering taps" makes sense. it's referring to Taps, the bugle tribute they play at army funerals. the first two lines confuse me cos he changes the subject throughout the song from "she" to "he" (murphy). i'd imagine the song is about murphy but the first two lines throw it off. ideas? |

| Kevin Devine – No One Else's Problem Lyrics | 18 years ago |

actually jonny, jesse is given official credit on this song, cotton crush, and afterparty... kevin wrote all the tracks though (for which i completely admire him) -- if there's one line i would've guessed to be jesse's, it'd be "I worry that I may never be satisfied" considering he's the infamous jesse lacey who lives in a world of uncertainty and questionable faith... |

| Brand New – You Won't Know Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| do you guys really think they ignored all 90-some-odd songs they've written (because they say they have that many COMPLETE songs, meaning music+lyrics) to write frantically for 5 months about the same story? i mean, the limousine connection is virtually undeniable, and the rest can relate if you construe them the right way, but i don't think they would have given up a chance to express the self-discovery they've experienced, or rather, limit the expression of such to just "sowing season" (and "jesus christ" if you want). it's an amazing connection to make that it could start on 7 and end on 6 and it all makes sense musically... if it were any other band. brand new goes against the norm, so why would they want to premiere a very commonly-used cyclical album concept based on the story of a girl's death, no matter how tragic? | |

WARNING: huge long interp below. beware. in my opinion, untitled 9 (symbolically the final demo) was written to the fans. please say you'll come along tonight please sing the words we love don't say that you forgot them don't keep the hand we've come to hold i know you want to untie this rope and let it go ^ that verse sends a message to the fans along the lines of, "please stay true to us, even though you're ready to give up on us since we don't tell you anything" (since brand new is notoriously secretive about, um, everything). please pose my skeletal remains give me a working pen and i will live forever please let them love me though i fade i know you want to i know you want to i know you want to run away ^ there are rumors that at some point vinnie wanted to leave the band, hence running away... but i think it's more directed toward the fans. "let them love me though i fade" is talking about the fading of the band (specifically jesse and his fading determination to live the life he lived the last 3 years). "pose my skeletal remains" is a message to the fans- "send out something, anything that represents me (jesse) and what i've become -- give the fans a working pen, or let them write about it, and i (and the rumors about me) will live forever." we're burning our own tonight the signal spikes when sorrows come they come on battalions ^ "burning our own..." (or "burning out alone," whichever) could be talking about the band breaking up, but i don't think that's quite what they were saying... it seems more like they're trying to forget what they've done in the past (stylistically) and they're writing stuff that's new to them -- their best work (spiking signal) comes when they're sad. the ideas come on battalions, or all at once. please keep the sounds from running out please let our steps fall soft keep them from hearing our talk please let some hope come with the day i know you want to i know you want to i know you want to run away ^ message to the fans: "please let us keep making music, but secretly, so no one really knows what we're doing. let every day bring us some new inspiration, and fans, hang in there, i know you want to let us go, but don't." so we watch the time we keep you know that i am swift you know that i am quick you know that i am fast asleep ^ brand new is notorious for sending mixed signals. that's a perfect example. jesse contradicts himself by saying what you (the fans) know, which essentially shows that they don't know anything cos all the information they have is contradictory. this is just a personal viewpoint, but brand new lyrics are famous for having incredible meaning buried in their lyrics. it can be seen that jesse and vinnie carefully craft every line, because every single song they've written holds so much truth in its words. i absolutely love them to death and it just amazes me how much they've embraced the term 'alternative' both in their music style and the way they write lyrics :) |

| Brand New – Coca-Cola Lyrics | 19 years ago |

With blood and feathers On my torn paws You ain't nothing but a dead duck I ain't nothing but a hound dog You seep in the windows and vents And I lay here in the grass and I lose your sent If god gave me grace than way aren't I graceful? My joints are frozen cold and old and idle If it's by air Then I don't wanna know If we all don't take cover we're all going to fall back in love again You work late to fight off your poison If the patient dies you take the night off They worked out all the bugs If we have enough money you can buy love You work out the perceptions in me I sing, sing, sing, these ten most deadly things The mark on your breast from your baby teething Give him my name if he is needing If it's by sea I don't wanna know If we all don't take cover we're all going to fall back in love again Bless you, your beautiful life And curse your god when your friends die If it's by air Well I don't wanna know If we all don't take cover we're all going to fall back in love again You work late and fight off your poison If the patient dies then you take the night off |

in the bridge of the new version, i hear: "we're never gonna feel as full as we felt so let's go outside on the pavement and tote tokens i'm trying to be (?) i'll stand as still as you need cos you're so good at talking smack, heart attack but you're the apple of my eye anyway" |

british accent much? still an amazing song |
|
| Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| what really kills me about this song is how brand new manages to control the song's intensity. it builds up and builds up, then pulls back a little, til the wood and nails part... then once that's over you're left with the realization that that was the big breakdown. it's a beautifully written song to say the absolute least. | |

the fact that he changed the words drastically from untitled 8 sends a message. 8 started out, "i'm losing all my friends, losing them to drinking and to driving, losing all my friends, and I WANT 'EM BACK." now that that phase of his life has passed he seems to be reflecting on a recent time in his life when he felt things weren't working out the way he hoped. fortunately now it's getting better ("I am on the mend, at least now I can say I'm trying") and he's working on fixing himself and his environment. "Is it in you now to bear to hear the truths that you were spoken, twisted up by knaves in a trap for fools? Is it in you now to watch the things you gave your life to, broken? You stoop and build them up with worn out tools." it's been established that this verse comes from the poem "if," but it seems to be asking another person if they have the strength to watch things around them break before their own eyes. personal interpretation, there are probably more. "Nothing gets so bad, a whisper from your father couldn't fix it. Your whispers like a bridge, he's a river span." i don't think this is talking about a strained relationship with a parent, anyone feel like summarizing the metaphor? "Take all that you have, turn it into something you were missing. Somebody threw that brick and shattered all your plans." 1st sentence = one of my favorite lines. as if maybe something you already have can make up for what you don't have, now that your plans have gone to waste. "Time to get the seeds and put them in the cold ground, it takes a while to grow anything, before it's coming to an end, yeah." time to make plans for myself and live life the way i want to before i die, cos it'll take a while to establish a presence/direction. "Before you put my body in the cold ground, take some time to warm it with your hands, before it's coming to an end, yeah." possibly a cry for affection while he creates this new life. "Do you miss the blend of colours she left in your black and white field? do you feel condemned just being there?" bad memories of an old friend/love (however interpreted), wondering if the person misses her or if it's more of a bitter feeling. "I am not your friend, I am just a man who knows how it feels. I am not your friend, I am not your lover, I am not your family, yeah." he's been in the person's shoes. favorite part of the song. all of this is a complete guess. anyone wanna put it together? |

| Brand New – Sowing Season (Yeah) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i was not impressed by the demo. acoustic version of a song w/ minimal chord progressions = boring boring boring. but the remastering of this song completely blew me out of the water. i'm in awe. brand new did it again. and on november 21st they'll do it again and again and again with every new track on the album that we haven't heard. simply amazing. | |
