Fiona Apple – Please Please Please Lyrics 19 years ago
You can picture the record execs trying to get her to make a hit by writing songs like some of her old stuff, which will of course, keep them steady (read: $$$$), but keep her stagnant as an artist, "going nowhere"... They don't want melodies, to prissy...no maladies, too down and depressing...just mainstream hit type songs...well, screw off a holes! Great stuff...

Fiona Apple – Love Ridden Lyrics 19 years ago
Another amazing song. Seems to me she's dealing with the post mortem of a romantic relationship. She's still friends with him. For her, the romance still beckons, but alas, it isn't meant to be. So, no, not baby anymore...from now on she'll just use his simple name...no more romantic kisses, just kisses on the cheek...and probably, in a while, when he and perhaps she, have moved on to the next relationships, they'll be reduced to a mere wave.

Her lyrics and the emotion of her voice so aptly describe these situations and the associated feelings, it's uncanny.

Fiona Apple – I Know Lyrics 19 years ago
On my short list of the most beautiful songs of all time, this is right up there.

It's hard to say what is better, the lyrics or the music. The lyrics conjure up thoughts and situations many of us have experienced, but they're written in such a clever and artful manner. Though impressive, it would be hard to look at these words, without having heard the song, and be able to fully appreciate their emotion and depth. Fiona's exceptionally soulful vocals really bring the words to life. I just caught her show at Jones Beach and, I have to admit, I shed more than one tear while witnessing the very emotional performance of this song.

As far as the meaning. To me, it's about a love triangle, that may or may not involve more than two people. She is seeing a man that she is hopelessly in love with. She's willing to endure a variety of crap that most people probably wouldn't have put up with while he works out some significant dilemma. And he has a fair amount of fondeness and trust for her as well. It's the type of relationship where he can tell her anything, and cares a lot for her, maybe even having "relations"; despite his apparent deep feelings for her, he's not ready to commit to her just now, and hence, he cannot utter the phrase "I love you"....but she's telling him, he doesn't have to say it, because....she'll know.

So we're left to wonder, what is this other entity, that is competing for his time and affection. Is it another woman? Well, that's one disctinct possibility...but perhaps also, we could look more literally at the lyrics...there's the "backstage door" and closing curtains...was this guy a performer who is focusing on his career and can't committ to her right now? Another possibility could be drugs? Is the "she" in "while she's still around" a metaphor for Heroin or something? Maybe I'm reaching...but you get the idea.

Anyway, it's a great song from an amazingly talented young woman. I have much love for Fiona.
