| Courtney Love – But Julian, I'm a Little Older Than You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
i hope i didn't offend any Courtney fans about Jules being too cool for Courtney, i don't mind her because Kurt (r.i.p.) loved her. SO the Strokes have said more than once that "Meet Me in the Bathroom" is not about Courtney Love (despite her wishes, lol). iBut isn't it really weird that Julian's hero's (who is Kurt Cobain) widow writes a love song about him or seems to have a crush on him? well there are article written about how Julian Casablancas and Kurt Cobain and how they're both alike so yeah..... |

| Actually "Meet Me In the Bathroom" IS NOT about Courtney Love. That's what people say about most of the songs in the world, that it's about Courtney. Anyways the Strokes rock and Julian is way too cool for Courtney! | |

This song is just too beautifully and genuinely written!!! It has like a melancholic mood to it. If you just read the words without the music it's just reading poetry. I almost feel jealous about his writing. lol. This makes me feel really sympathetic towards what Julian or this person is going through. And you realize that it's just so hard to stop doing something or thinking in some wrong manner that you've been doing for so long because that's usually what was the first and easiest thing for you to reach for. And life usually brings back a part of the past... and for some people it's not easy to turn away from something that they still miss/remember. |

| The Strokes – 15 Minutes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Definitely one of their geniously written lyrics (well i could argue that they all are..) 15 Minutes is obviously a reference to Andy Warhol's famous quote: "Everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes." I think this song is about a “normal” guy who is with a “famous” girl (who has worked really hard to get where she is and is now living her dreams) for a while… and I guess it’s for a very short period. And for the short time that he’s with this girl he’s experiencing the fast-paced, exciting, cameras-in-your-face, etc. part of a celebrity life. “It was all just a dream, oh no I wish it was real.” “All my pets they were there and they smiled Take a shit - it was fine”. So he’s referring to dreams and mentions that his pets are there and they’re smiling at him…You know how when you have a dream it seems just like your real life but there’s always something surreal /something that doesn’t fit (e.g. your pets smiling at you???)… And it’s this surrealness of dreams that separate them from your memories. So his time with this girl wasn’t actually a dream… something went wrong in their relationship and it ended so fast that it seemed more like a dream or a hallucination for him. “Everybody's so inviting They've got it in for me I know” People love famous people. They also love to gossip about them and … let the world know about their personal issues, fallouts, whatever through TV, internet, magazines, etc. He’s thinking about the good and the ugly of this “now life”. “It's not that I don't really love you It's just that I don't really know” He really likes this girl but he’s not sure if he wants to be with her forever… he’s not sure if he really wants to be “the it girl’s man”. “The hateful things you think you want to say Time will turn them into jokes...yep.” I’m not sure what the “hateful things” are but whatever it is the girl is thinking about them but in the future she wouldn’t even acknowledge that she ever thought about them or said them. “Yes, it was all just a dream, oh no Was it real? I don't know, I hope so...” “Here we go! Can I play? Can I watch? He would like one more night in your life.” Yes this guy is enjoying the high life and he wants to keep it that way… And the fact that “he’s asking” the girl gives the impression that it’s up to the girl whether he gets to live this life or has to go back to wherever he came from.. So he has to be careful and be a “nice preferable guy” for this girl (“Can I do this? Can I do that?”). “I saw worlds they don't stop; they're like us They go fast like a sun that's been shot” Hmmm…I love how they play fast halfway through…it definitely fits the mood/theme of the song. I guess this guy is comparing people to planets… some planets rotate faster then Earth some rotate slower… “Fast like a sun that’s been shot”: (if the sun bursts then there’s no control over where its pieces will fall and burn what ……..well if it ever does happen then its death for most planets but maybe not the universe cause people think maybe its infinite). Right now he’s seeing what it’s like to live a high/fast-paced life but he sees that it’s also a dangerous life. Because in today’s world there always is and always will be headliners…e.g. if someone famous dies then their death will be reportedly instantly and everywhere as compared to a unfamous (?I don’t think that a word?) person’s death. If you’re famous then you may have no control over what’s being printed/photographed/said about you. Also this also reminds me of how we have better faster technology but we also have more atrocities occurring worldwide daily than ever before. Again… the good and the bad of life. “Everybody at the party shouldn't worry if I'm there Everybody at the party shouldn't worry what they wear Cause today they'll talk about us, and tomorrow they won't care” So in this short relationship or in this fifteen minutes of worldwide attention, people “will care” if you’re present or not, if you’re gay or not, or if you showed up in your pj’s or in all in versace. But as soon as someone else is today’s “it person” then the world forgets about you. Cuz “today” is now “yesterday”. (Well… no life is perfect). “This whole life is it a dream? I can't tell I got up, then I waved, then I fell I recall, you were all there with me; Overjoyed and at peace” Again he’s mentioning that “short sweet dream that you had and that could have lasted longer if it weren’t for that alarm clock that woke you up” feeling. “First time around Second took so long Third time's a charm Circle of fourths Five days to rehearse Six to make it work Seven notes in a scale Eight in some countries Nine in fancy keys Ten years we've been friends Eleven seconds to hell And of course, twelve major chords” I won’t elaborate on this part cuz I think the posts above explain well. But I’ll add that for some people it takes a lot of hard cold work to get where they want and for others it’s some advantage that they have (e.g. they’re pretty, they have connections, they’re born a millionaire, etc). And it can either take years or even minutes to ruin someone’s life. So yes he was famous for just fifteen minutes. So this is what I think when I listen to this song: |

QUOTE: by terri kaye on 08-15-2006 @ 01:48:38 PM " evil critics need to just shup up. true music fans will listen to these songs & get something out of all of them. i'll say it again: i have not heard a crappy strokes song yet & i am someone who really LISTENS to music. and thanks to everyone here who posts their thoughts because it helps me too. i love this band!!! " CHEERS to you!! I totally agree with you.. seems like every Strokes song page you read there has to be at least one person who puts them down. Why do you guys do that??? I mean I really can't understand why there's so many people who go "Huh the Strokes? i think i've heard of them"... "or those guys? i think they're weird" and the most hated comment: "i used to like them but now they've changed". People don't stay 20 or single or say, sad/happy forever!!! People should be happy that there's a band out there who actually puts in hours of hard work for the money they make They don't get payed like some other "artists" for writing like 20 songs about bullets and blood (no offence to emo fans, actually sometimes i listen to MCR but for their guitar lol), or cuz they look good on those junky teen magazines, you get the drift.... If you really listen to their music and even to their few lowlites (e.g. killing lies) you will see that compared to other people... these guys are "the artists". Their music follows musical theory/rules, all of their lyrics are genius poetry, and Jules' vocals... well his voice never gets annoying, and do you know anyone who sounds as real as him live??? I think he might be one of the best original singers right now... (...sigh r.i.p. K. Cobain). Sometimes I think that it's ok that they're not getting the mainstream recognition of say RHChili Peppers or even Coldplay. Cuz you know the commercial success will eventually hit you in the head... but i think their commercial success is finally coming... Probably for sure after their fourth album (if nothing goes wrong). This song "What Ever Happened?" is featured on the "Marie Antionette" Kirsten Dunst movie. Also, they wear chuck taylors under their dresses. (cool). Apparently the director's a fan. i think "Fear of Sleep" is also featured on some movie?? I'm not sure... uuhhh... i should be heading to class... i was supposed to add my interpretation of this song but got distracted by the idea of Strokes putdowners... well you have to accept the fact that we're 6B people and we're all bound to love stuff hate stuff... !!!! But you can't deny that The Strokes have revitalized rock!!!! |

| The Strokes – On The Other Side Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
For those who don't like this song ...well i hope you guys don't call yourselves "A Strokes fan" I was listening to this song on repeat trying to figure out what it's all about...hmmm and reading the other posts I would have to say that it's about Julian and... I think his relationship with his family before... so as a son? I know right now that the other band members are cool with their families but I haven't heard anything about Julian. I don't know much about his bio/life history either... all I've read is that his parents are divorced, he was an alcoholic from an early age... Maybe this song is based on his childhood/teenage years ?: "I'm tired of everyone i know. Of everyone i see on the street, and on T.V. On the other side, on the other side. Nobodys waiting for me, on the other side." So Julian may be writing about a person who has family and friends everywhere but they don't click with him or he doesn't connect with them... He isn't getting the attention he needs. He is missing that "special person" who would be able to show him something different/something better ... or just "be there" for him. I can kind of relate to this... my first year of university(which is in a big city), was really depressing. i come from a big family and i knew a lot of people in high school so i was really used to being around people and the attention.. and you know, knowing that I exist. so my university classes were really big and I found it really hard to find someone who i would make "good friends" with. I started to become antisocial and i hated being around so many people everyday, i'd wish that someone familiar would call my name. I started to become mistrustful /judgemental of people and i would always think about how i was going to live through this for another 3-7 years... like a ghost...lol... i'm glad to say though that i didn't turn towards drugs/alcohol/self-mutilation. anyways, "I hate them all, i hate them all. I hate myself, for hating them. So I'll drink some more. I'll love them all. I'll drink even more. I'll hate them even more than I did before. On the other side, on the other side. Nobodys waiting for me, on the other side." He feels really guilty and depressed that he hates these people (his family and friends) , so he develops a drinking habit (maybe to gain attention). He's referring to" the other side" as the Future. His future isn't looking bright from where he's fallen down. He sees himself alone then like he is now. "I remember when you came. You told me how to sing. Now it seems so far away. You told me how to say." So obviously someone "new" has walked into his life and has helped him to start fresh. I think it could be a reference to Juliet. "First Impressions of Earth" is The Strokes 'rebirth' and an end to Julian's alcoholism, after they almost broke up after 2003's "Room on Fire". I guess that's also when Juliet walked into his life. This part of the lyrics is like a memory/flashback. Memories are often related to dreams... I'm thinking that Jules is giving it a surreal impression. This person is there for that moment when your life is beginning to change. "Nows it seems so far away" = He's thinking It's almost too good to be true? "Im tired of being so judgemental of everyone I will not go to sleep, I will train my eyes to see And my mind is as blind as a branch on a tree." He's really tired of being close-minded and he will do what it takes to forget the past(?). It's kind of hard to explain what "my mind is as blind as a branch on a tree" means exactly (love Julian's power of words) but I hope this is a good analogy: blind as a branch on a tree is like trying to find someone in a large crowd of people who are dressed exactly like that person. You can't spot that person or that branch because they all look like all the other people or other branches. You've forgotten about that "something special about them" that makes them different from everyone else. Again it also refers to narrowmindedness/being judgmental. So the idea that he's so tired because he's so judgmental of everyone has caused him depression and to think negative and He doesn't want this. He would like some peace. "On the other side, on the other side. Nobodys waiting for me, on the other side. On the other side, on the other side. I know you're waiting for me, on the other side. " Finally there is hope for him at the end because he realizes that this "new" person who walked into his life will be there for the rest of his life/in the future/on the other side. I really like how he end his words with "I know you're waiting for me, on the other side. " It really gives a definite sense of hope. so there you go... This is what I think ... any thoughts on this interpretation? |

| The Strokes – Razorblade Lyrics | 19 years ago |

The "CORRECT" Lyrics are: Oh the razor blade That's what I call LOVE. I bet you'd pick it up and mess around with it If I put it down . It gets extremely complicated; Anything to forget everything. Got to take me out, At least once a week. Whether I'm in your arms, Or I'm at your feet. I know exactly what you're thinking, you won't say it now, But in your heart it's LOUD Oh no... My feelings are more important than yours. Oh, drop dead, I don't care I won't worry... There you go. Oh, the razor blade, Wish it would snap this rope . The world is in your hand, Or it's at your throat. At times it's not that complicated; Anything to forget everything. He would never talk, But he was not shy. She was a street-smart girl, But she could not lie. They were perfect for each other. Say it now, Cause in your heart it's LOUD Oh no... My feelings are more important than yours . Oh... drop dead, I don't care, I won't worry. Sweetheart... Your feelings are more important of course... (of course!) Everyone that wanted Everything that we would take from them. I don't wanna know, I don't wanna know. Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me. No... Don't... Okay. |

"The DRIZZLE" I salute you for that wonderful comment!!! people who hate the Stroke's new sound are afraid of change ! and thats really a shame right now in present times cuz change is all around us (look infront urself) ahem an anonymous quote : "If nothing ever changed, there'd be no butterflies!" lol the Strokes are one of those few bands that has changed their sound each time and they still rock harder each time... i hope only death/retirement stops them from making more good albums and more good/long solos for me to try out! this is one of their many best solos in F.I.O.E. and a really different one. i think the beginning of the solo sounds like a middle eastern melody ...hmm |

| The Strokes – Ask Me Anything Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I don’t think this is a song where the Strokes were just messing around. I think this song deserves an in-depth analysis, lol. These lyrics are just amazingly abstract. They use simple short sentences but there’s a bigger picture to them. HERE is my not-so readers digest view of this song (also adding on to the other posts): I think that the person in this song is saying that they know so much and they are capable of so many things but they’re not able to (or they just choose not to): "We could drag it out But that's for other bands to do" "I'd like to watch, I'd love to read. I'd like a part, I'd like the lead." They’re like “you can ask me for anything but I’m not able/going to give you the answer you want”. There’s a barrier somewhere. Referring to the indian/children lines: "Hostile Indians: We named a summer camp for you." "Harmless children: We named our soldiers after you." People are capable of pleasing/sucking up to others in all kinds of ways but everyone has a limit: It’s like giving someone a birthday card that’s bought from a dollar store. Either you don’t have the money to buy an eight-dollar one or the receiver isn’t that special to you (I can’t think of a better comparison right now!). The lines: "Right, wrong, what to do? Some day it will come to you." goes kind of in sync with: "Don't be a coconut, God is tryin' to talk to you." I find interpreting those four lines kind of difficult but I’ll say sumthing about it anyways:im thinking it implies that there’s more than one answer to a problem but the ideal answer is from your own instincts not others. The answers there, sometimes you don’t see it right away. It’s really hard to make certain choices and for some ppl it helps if they turn to God. Sometimes you remember God and other times you forget that He’s there. [I know sum of u are probably thinking I’m overdoing this song interpretation but my head’s full of ideas right now and I need somewhere to spill them onto]. Anyways I’ve just realized that the “ask me anything but I have nothing to say” idea is kind of like that with God. People ask God to answer their prayers or just ask random questions (like me) but he doesn’t actually appear in figure and answer you. If good happens then you thank God because you knew all along that he’s capable of anything and that ur a good person. If bad happens, you demand of Him what did I do to deserve this? And sum ppl actually turn away from God because he didn’t “provide” the answers they wanted. There’s more than one alternative in life and which you decide is wholly up to YOU, even if you base your choice against God’s/ mom’s/stranger’s/etc. opinions. Because everyone in this chaotic world is their own individual. Lastly, I agree with Snowden12 “he won't do a thing until faced with survival”. When it says “I’ve got nothing to hide” I see it as saying that “all the answers are there in front of you, you really don’t need to ask me,i might give you a right answer or i might give you a wrong answer. but if you really insist then I have to. He has to forget his uneasiness/shyness and to give the desired answer” in order to save himself: "Oh, I'll kill to survive I've got nothing to hide Wish I wasn't so shy." Does this make sense??? |

| The Strokes – You Only Live Once Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I don’t know why people get scared when bands come out with an album that’s different from their previous stuff. I hear many comments from ppl saying that one thing that they don’t like about the Strokes is that they always change their style. For me I never considered them a specific genre like indie or garage and that’s sumthing I admire them for… they’re just really *different* and that I think makes them special… I can’t listen to a band whose latest album sounds like another reproduction of the one two years before. I’m not sure what the fab five were thinking when they chose the Strokes as their name but to me its like their music; the word “stroke” has many different meanings but its all about a kind of movement… and that’s how their songs are; they sound all different but there’s something that gives them all the Strokish air. newayz I agree with TTison’s interpretation of this song – the title of the song speaks for itself. I really love the intro and it sounds great as a ringtone !!! | |
| The Strokes – Electricityscape Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
the title... ELECTRICITYSCAPE if we're going with the julian's rebirth theory then i think that the title might mean SCAPE = escaping, turning away from ELECTRICITY = fame/stardom or chaos so like turning away from the ?chaotic? past/present and trying to start fresh? i just realized that "electricity" is also synonymous to "current" so lyrically it could be electricityscape = "escaping current times/present"? any input on this interpretation? |
