i have heard the song interpreted as saying there is NO hope but i prefer to hear it saying there is A hope....it fits with my seeing the second album as more courageous and open and less dark (although i liked the first album intensely)

i see this song about intimacy ......a person is sabotaging a relationship and using his/her madness to do so........the singer is saying look we ALL are insane and it doesn't stop others from being committed to some one so quit making excuses.....waiting for something to happen is not going to lead anywhere towards passionate vulnerability |

i have been told the lyric probably says there is no reason to STAY....but i think the word stray..by having no reason to stray is uncharacteristically affirmative of whatever relationship the singer is in.....and perhaps more unexpected and therefore interesting for a band who once wrote about love being found in a graveyard |

This seems to be one song that may get Kip called the Jewish Morrissey. That he has to ask what the body is for seems a nod to celibacy or innocence although he does seem to actively engage with the person in this song. Also, I am curious about the reference to "sin" along with the reference to "heaven" in Heaven's Gonna Happen Now
What sort of metaphysics is he committed to?
I do not think the chords are related to Joy Division's Atmosphere nor is the theme. (Isn't Atmosphere a foreshadowing of Ian Curtis suicide? A much heavier theme.) |

Saying no to love seems another nod to Kip being the Jewish Morrissey. At least when Morrissey was in his celibacy periods.
I know Peggy made a comment about saying yes to love if in paris-which is where she was when she made the comment. |

I think photojonny may be correct about resisting "normalization." I have often wondered if any of the songs on this album could be referring to same-sex desire or bisexuality. I saw an interview where Kip said he could not run for President due to indiscretions when younger. Any speculation or knowledge? |

The Black Hole Kids I think is a reference to the Adolescents song. The definition I saw said that the black hole is a one bedroom apartment in California where homeless kids into punk music live.
The Vivian Girls song Death also refers to staying alive and came out the previous year.
I have wondered if the Golden Dawn line is a reference to the occult group at the beginning of the last century that had as members Aleister Crowley and W.B. Yeats. |

Any ideas what the Pains or Kip's religious views may be? (I know Kip is Jewish but I was just curious how metaphorical the heaven reference is-it clearly seems to be a reference to immanence-heaven HERE not transcendent-elsewhere)
Is the name Justine a reference to the Smashing Pumpkins song 1979? I always though that Justine in 1979 was a reference to the Marquis de Sade-(she didn't know the rules unlike her more corrupt/experienced sibling Juliette) |
