I don't think the writer is in love with Amanda at all. I always got the impression that the lines like "when she sings its gold" and "Amanda talks about nothing but she'll make you think its poetry" are supposed to be sarcastic. It seems to me like the girl thinks very highly of herself, but she's just a self absorbed, spoiled teenager who needs to grow up. The song is probably written out of frustration because the girl won't leave him alone rather than being torn because she's too young but he's in love with her despite all these incredibly annoying and unnattractive qualities she has. |

I think this song is about how people adhere to western culture as though it were a religion. People are compelled to do things exactly as everyone else does, because they are *comfortable* that way. Thinking and living as an individual makes one subject to rejection from the people who conform to what the media says you should be. I don't think this song is about the commercialization of religion - I think its about how many (or most) people submit to culture/media as they would submit to a religion. They sacrifice their individuality for the comfort of acceptance by whatever group is portrayed by the media as "the group to be in". |
