Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms Lyrics 19 years ago
Half of you are correct, it IS about war... but ... it IS NOT about the American Civil war, Jacobite war, Bosnia and Lebanon, Israel and Iraq. It is about the Falklands conflict in 1982.

Briefly (put your map away) the Falklands Islands are a United Kingdom Overseas Territory and are an associated territory of the European Union. 8000 miles from the UK and 300 miles from Argentina. On April 2 1982, a massive invasion of the Islands by Argentine forces took place. The 80 Royal Marines and local volunteer force were overpowered after courageous resistance and the Islands were placed under Argentinian rule. A combined British Task Force was despatched on April 3, the first troops landing at San Carlos Bay on May 21. By June 14, the Argentine invaders had been overcome after fierce sea, land and air battles. 12,000 troops surrendered. 258 Britons, including three Falkland Islands civilians, lost their lives and 649 Argentinians died.

The song can be adapted to most wars I agree, but it IS about the Falklands conflict, and if you go to the Falklands as I did, you will understand why and what the song is about.
