To me, this song details the disintegration of relationships, both between people and nations, and the resulting desperate type of sadness that follows such hopeless disintegration. The beginning verses tell of the impending end of a relationship with a lover, Laura. The songwriter wants to leave the relationship (the side walk holds diamonds, they argue walk this way), and Laura senses it (I dreamed you were carried away…don’t go away). I think the kids playing guns in the street shows the human tendency towards hostilely resolving conflict – and in this instance, the lovers walk away and the nations go to war. Reconciliation eludes the lovers and nations due to “the shackles of language,” “greed” and others. Taps in the song’s middle powerfully heightens the sense of mourning for both the death of the war’s veterans and the death of a love. Beautiful song. |
