| all lyrics aside, this song is musically amazing. theres a wonderfully contrasting feel throughout the song, going from jazzy to almost hardcore rock, and into a mellow soothing riff. monomena is a one of a kind band | |

yea those are definitly the right lyrics aoeuhnts has got up there. i think the song questions whether home even exists altogether. for a ghost, there is no sack of skin. so home must be a place of retreat you can trace your steps back to. home is where everything begins possibly? i think there's more to this girl rose thats not in the song. i think menomena likes to leave lyrics open ended like this so theres more that the mind thinks up, theres more to interpret, and interpretations are more widely ranged. these lyrics are so full of intangible, abstract thought, its hard to analyze. but it sounds so cool right after the first set of 'i can trace back my tracks' - thats my favorite piano riff in the whole world. menomena rocks |

the song certainly is a beautiful song. It seems to me that its about someone who lived a very simple and civilized life. no adventures or passionate moments, just calm living. then on some life-changing weekend night this elizabeth girl comes along and shows him her side of life, full of excitement and daring fun. "my mind was set, just like the sun's red, but now the sun is setting" probably just explains how he had a very strict view of how his life would be played out, but now things are changing. the man seems to have this recurring fear of dying, probably not actually death but a little more metaphorical. He sees elizabeth's life as a ticket down the drain, but slowly, through their relationship begins to trust her. "despite the red and years and years of sinning, elizabeth is winning" possibly winning his heart? then on this bike trip in st andrews, he gives in. he gives up his "purity" realizing that life is so much more than strict complacency. this purity could mean alot of things, but i specifically think it means sexual purity, and with the next line hinting at rolling around in the dirt and getting a little roughed up - it seems clear that they made love, probably his first time, and finally, he's begun to breath outside the stillness he's lived in so long. and with this "rite of passage" so to speak, he's not afraid of the metaphorical dying like he was before. forget all the people that judge him, because he doesnt care anymore because hes learned to enjoy life. |

i agree with Variable up there, this song is even more powerful when you can relate to it -- my grandmother actually did die of cancer, and as a wierd coincidence i happened to be listening to this song as she did (she lived in illinois - another little coincidence). needless to say it made this song a little more personal to me. i also agree that this song is not a christian song, nor is sufjan a christian writer. he simply writes about things he feels or thinks about. this song is a little short of "praise" for God, describing how God not only ignores us, but afterwards keeps taking away until we feel entirely helpless. |

| Andrew Bird – 11:11 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This song is about a story Andrew Bird read about a boy who's brother, while standing in front of a window drinking a glass of milk, was shot to death. The brother watched as the window shattered, and the glass of milk fell to the floor. He, I imagine, felt entirely helpless as he witnessed the end of his brother's life. Somewhat coincidentally, the shattered glass from the window flew through the air, and the shooting claimed yet another life as the glass cut through the rain, and killed a woman who had got in the way of the intentions of the wind. This song obviously deals with the idea of fate, and how certain things are completely inescapable and completely unpredictable. Bad things happen, and sometimes there is nothing we can do to prevent them, they just happen by the winds of chance. No one is to really be blamed, save for maybe the will that the wind chose. |

| one day i was bored as all-getup playing internet games, one of which was Mah Jongg, (i dont know if anybody's played that before, but you can on addictinggames.com) and im about 5 minutes through, thinking about how ive really gotten nowhere and that " this game takes too long." fun way to unknowingly reference a song AND peep a little bit more into the bird's mind. | |
| The Books – Enjoy Your Worries, You May Never Have Them Again Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i never really knew what to take from this song. the books are pretty difficult to analyze because most of there music are samples... but one day, the title got to me, "enjoy your worries, you may never have them again". I think it simply means to enjoy (not in teh sense of "to take pleasure in" but a bit more like "utilize" your worries (the things you worry about), because if you don't, they might come true, and thus, you will never have them again. | |
| The Books – An Owl with Knees Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| definitely tripping song.. "Breathe, be calm/You're gone, gone on" like mentally gone. then the alteration of time kicks in: you dont know where you are, who you are, when you are. real trippy. | |
