I saw Ani perform this past weekend and she performed a new song, Amendment, that also touches on the issue of abortion. When she was introducing that song, she cleared up some of the things about this song. Initially, ani was too ashamed to talk/sing about her abortions, but then she read Lucille Clifton's "Lost Baby Poem" and realized that her silence wasn't helping anyone. So that's why she wrote "Lost Woman Song" and included the Lucille's name toward the end. |

It's "muscular motel light", not lady. I know lady seems to make more sense, but Ani describes light as being muscular in Dog Coffee too. I think it means that the light is strong and overwhelming. |

| I love this song. I think it's so powerful. I got chills the first time I heard it. Just one question though: catnamedzane said that the "he" in the song is her father. How do you figure that? It sounds to me like it's whatever guy got her pregnant. Of course that could be her father, but the way she said it, I was under the impression that it was a boyfriend. | |

I ADORE this song!!! I agree with spasticbean's interpretation. And in addition, I think in the "both hands" part, she's saying be gentle, like if you were talking to a child carrying something fragile: "you two hands so you don't drop it." It's another reference to how hard Ani and her parter were working to keep their relationship in tact. And I think the "don't close your eyes" part is like saying, "You don't want to miss this. These times are precious. We may not be together for too much longer. make sure you're present for these last moments we have." Just a guess :o) |
