Pink Floyd – Learning to Fly Lyrics 7 months ago
Someone once told me this song is based on the novel "The Teachings of Don Juan" by Carlos Castaneda. Based.on that info, I went and bought the book and after reading it I could definitely see the tie-ins; especially in the film clip for the song.

The story is about a guy who goes to an Indian Shaman and undertakes training to become a 'man of knowledge'. As a result he learns how to leave his physical body in the form of a spirit animal which is an eagle, and soar into the sky. After watching the music clip for this song, it was hard to deny it may have something to do with this story.

Enya – May It Be Lyrics 9 months ago
@[BritneySpears:48273] Sucks I love that you had the musical maturity at 12 to love Enya when all your friends were listening to very different stuff. It's kinda amazing to think you were 12 when you wrote this and you'd now be 33! Hope you still love Enya.

The Church – Metropolis Lyrics 4 years ago
What an amazing song. So beautifully put together; even after all these years I still fall in love with it all over again every time I hear it. I've never really been able to decipher what it's about but it's never taken away from it for me.

@[aussiemusicrules:21890] lol no you are not. Sonny is quite obviously his mate and racing partner. His "partner in crime" if you like. They build and race cars together. Nothing strange or wrong in that at all.

Tracy Chapman – Baby Can I Hold You Lyrics 7 years ago
@[CatfordNick:18773] Sorry I have read the words again with that in mind and although I certainly see where you're coming from it doesn't totally make sense to me. I feel the singer expresses too much deep love and yearning for somebody that has just been "on the end of yet another battering" as you put it. I know that DV victims often love their partners too but she does seem to have an incredible amount of yearning to be with this person. The overriding feeling for me seems to be that she wishes this partner could be 'hers' and wishes that she knew what to say to make them open up to her and 'become' hers. Her partner is unable to express the feelings and emotions she needs and yearns for. Anyway, thank you for your interpretation, it has been much food for thought.

What a beautiful song.
There's obviously many different interpretations here and who are we to say what is correct and what is not or even to say there IS a correct and a not. Music is art and is allowed to be open to interpretation.

For me, she is singing to a partner who is unable to express their deeper feelings and emotions. Her partner is able to ask for sex or maybe just comfort on a more superficial level but she wishes she could find the 'key' to let them open up and truly become 'hers'.

A sad and truly beautiful song.

@[shilo507:18621] Very interesting, I didn't know that about Gestalt therapy. I always assumed the 'not even the chair' reference simply meant he was lonely and longing to talk to somebody but no matter how much he may cry out there was nobody to listen

Neil Young – Out on the Weekend Lyrics 7 years ago
I had bought the Harvest album because I'd read somewhere that it was amazing, groundbreaking etc. At the time my wife and I were going through some hard times. I put it on in the loungeroom and went out the room for a bit. When I came back in, this song (the first song on the album) was nearly finished and my wife was sitting on the couch crying like a baby. She had been that moved by the sheer emotionality of it. I put it back to the beginning and sat down and by the end of it I felt the same. Just drained emotionally. It felt like a song of loss and longing; of knowing something was over and having to move on, somewhat directionless and empty. And that was exactly how we both felt in our marriage and this song had summed it up for both of us in just a few minutes. A few months later our marriage did indeed end. This song always takes me back to that moment, both of us sitting on that couch in silence, crying.

I feel like this entire album is about loss, particularly the loss a man feels when his life is falling apart at the seams and love seems like a distant memory; something you can't get back. It's powerful stuff for me. I love it. Thank you Neil.

@[chrisb1:18620] It's not sexist at all. Neil is putting himself down in this song, not women. It's supposed to express the pathetic point of view of a pathetic man who has nothing left.

@[bkabbott:18619] Not at all. Not one little bit. Neil is putting himself down in this song, not women. You need to look a bit deeper.

@[bkabbott:18618] It's a very sad song that has nothing whatsoever to do with putting women down. In fact, in some ways, Neil is putting himself down in this song. Look a little deeper.

@[Lucanio:18614] Are you kidding? That interpretation is quite a stretch I think. Just because Lou Reed played around with drugs it doesn't mean that every song has some kind of drug reference in it! Sheesh!

@[blackinkinmyblood:18613] Sorry, I think your interpretation is a load of rubbish. Just because Lou Reed played around with drugs you are trying to dig deep (very deep...clutching at straws in fact!) to find some kind of drug references in this song where none actually exists. Sorry to burst your bubble but as most others here already know, this song is just a very nice song about normal people living normal lives, that's all.

The Whitlams – No Aphrodisiac Lyrics 17 years ago
One of The Whitlams most beautiful songs, if not the most beautiful. Dressed2Depress, you are both right and wrong...as rachthegreat said so perfectly, the song starts with the reminiscence of love and finishes at something completely different. It's telling of the way that we so easily and thoughtlessly drift down the wrong path to fill a void that exists within us; a void that yearns to be filled. Anyway, cheers to Tim and the boys on one hell of a song.

I agree with you xdyr. I love all Nick's work...including this! It's hardly what I'd call 'pop music' anyway. Just a wonderful song.
