love this Folksy Rilo... but I think the song is about wanting someone to be with you, but loving them so much that you just want the best for them, you know they feel trapped and you wish they could be happy with you but know that they want better things...about feeling inadequate and pushing someone away because you just want the best for them as for the line about cake eating...i like it, its clumsy like natural speech, it dosnt flow like poetry...its just awkward and thats what i love about it |

I feel like this song is just about trying to get your shit together like we all are, feeling scared just about life I think the way Jenny keeps repeating, "cuz im not scared" means she really is, but the whole when you're dead part kind of throws me off... maybe just about trying to get it togerther before that, you know with a ticking clock and also just feeling so owerwelmed "and it must be nice to finish...when your dead" idk but i love, love, love rilo kiley and and love when jenny lewis says "fuck" ...and mexico can fuckin wait theres something so thrilling about such a pure voice saying that, its really powerful...especially in "A Better Son or Daughter...great song |

| I took this song to be about Chris's sympathy for animals, he is a vegetarian and supports PETA, I think it's kind of sarcastic towards how most people treat animals, disposable and collapsable like they are less than us, only a food source without feelings. But then when he sings animal "I" am its like hes saying were all animals, humans and animals, were more alike than we think we are. i think this song is about death and love, but theres more to it than that. It's about spirituality and religion, I think it really knocks organized religion - catholiscism in particular, "in catholic school as vicious as roman rule i got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black, i held my tounge as she told me son fear is the heart of love , so i never went back" obviously critiscising the catholic church, understandably, it is spitful the the God-fearing attitude that seems to be instilled in children rather than God-loving as it should be. It points towards something freer than organized religion not so strict as "roman rule" |

hab204 agreed, im having trouble getting into this album, i think its one of those one's you've got to listen to a few times to really start to get it, you start to enjoy it more with farmiliarity. But i think its very different from hopes and fears. This is my favorite song off the album thus far.
