Matchbox Twenty – How Far We've Come Lyrics 18 years ago
I definitely agree that its about issues such as global warming.. take action now or its all going in the shitter in 50 years or less.......

this is my interpretation of the lyrics.. i tried not to sway it too much by personal belief.

"i'm waking up at the start of the end of the world
but it's feeling just like every other morning before"

- hes coming to a realization or "waking up" and noticing whats going on around him. But everyone else is stuck in their ways and nothing is changing so it seems like every other day; nobody else is acting

"now i wonder what my life is gonna mean if it's gone"

- realizing his mortality. Also realizing that his life could possibly have more use and more meaning.

"cars are moving like a half a mile an hour and i
started staring at the passengers waving goodbye"

- people are slowly heading towards their death/end, things are going to shit. the people realize it, but theyre not doing anything to stop it

"can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time"

- realizing he shouldnt be self absorbed and pay more attention to global issues

"But i believe the world is burning to the ground
oh well, i guess we're gonna find out"

- the world is going to shit. Wars, global warming, mass consumption, greed, hate, etc. but nobody is doing anything. He feels helpless and sarcastically comments with the intent of making people realize that if nothing is done the world will "burn to the ground" and we will face the end, whatever that might be.

"let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come"

- this seems to be motivational, to get people to prove that we've come a long way and we can overcome global issues

"well, i believe it all is coming to an end
oh well i guess we're gonna pretend"

- pretending in this situation seems to be pretending nothing is wrong, working 9-5 monday to friday, being a drone, living your life and not looking up to see issues external to yourself. just closing your eyes and pretending everything is ok when its not.

"let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come"

"I think it turned ten o' clock, but I don't really know.
Then I can't remember caring for an hour or so."

- not sure about these lines.. maybe he spends all his time worrying/thinking about it and hes glad to have taken his mind off it for a little while

"started crying and i couldn't stop myself
i started running but there's nowhere to run to"

- if the world does "burn to the ground" its the entire world. we have nothing else, nowhere to run. this emphasizes the importance of taking action, because it will take the only world we have.

"I sat down on the street and took a look at myself,
said, "Where you going, man? You know the world is headed for Hell.
Say your goodbyes if you've got someone you can say goodbye to."

- He is considering who he is and what he's doing. He knows the consequences for what he's doing but is still going about his day to day business. he needs to realize what could happen and do what he can to stop it, if not prepare for the worst.

"i believe the world is burning to the ground
oh well, i guess we're gonna find out
let's see how far we've come, right now
let's see how far we've come
i believe it all is coming to an end
oh well i guess we're gonna pretend
let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come"

"It's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone.
There is no one on the corner and there's no one at home.
It was cool, cool, it was just all cool.
Now it's over for me and it's over for you.
Well, it's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone.
There is no one on the corner and there's no one at home.
Well, it was cool, cool, it was just all cool.
Now it's over for me and it's over for you."

- this verse seems to be drawing attention to those who try to make the worlds problems out to be smaller than they are. they say "it was just all cool" referring to those that ignore the problems and pretend everything is ok. the consequences of that ignorance is that now "its all gone". everyone is gone, friends, family, those you see every day, as well as worldwide.

"i believe the world is burning to the ground
oh well, i guess we're gonna find out
let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come
well, i believe it all is coming to an end
oh well i guess we're gonna pretend
let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come

let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come
let's see how far we've come"

does anyone else feel like theres two different people in this song he's talking about? the first being his new lover and the other being the girl that just left him?

i feel like its more about the time when you break up with a long time partner and find a rebound. seems like he's trying to convince himself to love this new girl just to get over the old one.

Seven sins of wantonness and
everything that's good is gone

- after commiting "the seven deadly sins" the narrator notices that everything that he once had placed value in is gone.
- possibly "everything thats good" is in reference to giving up on something you strongly believe in such as (but not nessicarily) religion/beliefs. also the "good" could be a reference to the opposite of a sin. for example he may have lost a girlfriend, friends or money to lust; health to gluttony, etc.

Sell it all for glory from the peers

- this line seems to be about selling out. giving up your beliefs for the admiration of people around you.

Silicone priestess scratch the back and
twists the knife to bone

- "silicone priestess" is likely a reference to a girl with implants/plastic surgery. scratch the back would be a reference to sleeping with someone, most likely sleeping with someone for their looks, and fake looks at that. "twists the knife to bone" would be a reference to the hurt that comes from sleeping with someone who doesnt really love you. again a repetition of the lust/selling out theme.

Kick against the pricks and scrape the shins

- "pricks" may be slang for "assholes" or a reference to something that hurts physically. "kick against the pricks" would be to fight against something that either emotionally or physically hurts you, but "scrape the shins" suggests that it only hurts one more to fight it.
