| Howie Day – Collide Lyrics | 17 years ago |

To me, this is a song about having doubts in a relationship. Perhaps taking a step up commitment-wise. It's moved away from the fresh, fun stage and is now at the gritty, tough stage. The singer is in his own head, telling himself that things may not quite be working as well as he thought. This is where I think there can be two interpretations of the chorus: "Even the best fall down sometimes, even the wrong words seem to rhyme." Here, he's either saying that things that aren't meant to be can sometimes happen. The best can fail, wrong words can appear to rhyme.. To me, this could be a justification for the two being wrong for each other (coupled up with the numerous references to the two being opposites). But through his doubt, they seem to come through for each other. When things seem at their worst, they 'collide' Another interpretation is that he's started to get scared and trapped - "I find I'm scared to know I'm always on your mind" - and in desperation, he's finding himself either looking for a get out with someone else or simply trying to justify his fears - 'well, even the best fall down sometimes...' He makes many allusions to the couple being opposites: shes open, hes closed; she leads, he follows etc. However, in the end, it seems that when he tries to justify ending this relationship, they collide and everything seems fine again. Perhaps, not a permanent fix but something strong enough to at least temporarily take his mind off the negatives in that relationship. The overall message I get is that, no matter how scared you get, no matter how much you talk things through with yourself and tell yourself such and such is for the best, love or even fate plays a much stronger role than any logical reasoning can ever play. I have been through something very similar myself with an ex-girlfriend. Things started to get bad, another girl started to appear on the scene, and I managed to convince myself that this new girl was better than the old one. My doubts got the best of me and all of those opposites I listed made me decide to break up with her for the new girl - who turned out to be a bitch I must say! Anyway, brilliant song! First heard it on Scrubs and it made me cry a little I'm embarrassed to say! |

Yeah, this song is definitely about being so in love with a person that absolutely nothing else in the world matters to you. The love is so deep that it's stretched beyond physical attraction and is simply the love of being able to be in the company of that person. The lyrics are beautiful, the drum beat is amazing. I don't think it could have been done any better. It's like one of those classic poems that always brings a tear to your eye. And the final line "You see, giant proclamations are all very well, but our love is louder than words." Must be one of the best lines I've ever heard. Fantastic band, fantastic song! |

| Funeral for a Friend – Drive Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| To me, this song has great meaning, having just been through a breakup myself. Basically, I think the song is about a really long relationship which has gone wrong, maybe because the couple have both grown up and grown apart but it has always been put on the backburner and never been focused on. Suddenly, something, whatever it is, has brought the relationship into question, Matt, still wants to make the relationship work, where the partner does not. Hence, 'useless sunsets' because they dont mind anything to her anymore. I particular like the line 'With one strategic blow, you find yourself back in the hole you used to sit so comfortably in.' What I think this means, and what it means to me, is that one day the guy had everything he could want and was truly happy and then the girl has simply said 'its over' and the guy is left with nothing, left back in the 'hole' over being single which before meeting the girl seemed so easy and now its the hardest thing in the world. I also like the reference to the whole affair being like a movie, this suggests to me that he thought everything was going towards a happy ending then it all suddenly went wrong, and now hes reached their final act of the movie(their relationship) and all thats left to do is break up, 'we dont need no happy endings'. Excellent song, great lyrics and sung so wonderfully by matt, you can feel the pain in every word. Its really helping me at the moment. | |
| Embrace (UK) – Ashes Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I think the song is about the band themselves. Embrace had an illustrious music career many years ago. However, people stopped buying their stuff and eventually they faded away, dying like the proverbially phoenix in the flames. 2 of the guys were unemployed, 2 worked in supermarkets when they were writing the album 'out of nothing'. Basically the guys were broke and taking one last shot at the big time. Ashes symbolises the Phoenix rising from the flames, breathing new life into Embrace. Basically saying, "yeah we were down but were back so deal with it!" Great emotional song, you can't help but feel good when you hear it |

i kinda think schoofchen's analysis is interesting and i would agree entirely. However, I'd just like to put forward an argument of my own: i think that in the first verse, the singer has just started going out with this girl who he believes is way out of his league and he can't believe his luck! " I'd like to say, that I was on your mind So I phone you at ten past three, in the afternoon" he phones her on the other side of the world (for whatever reason) just because he can and he is so smitten with her and believes she is with him. In the second verse, i think he acknowledges that he worships her but does not really have a very romantic approach with her, "I'm such a nice man to you, but so obscene" - hes really good to her but does not treat her with respect, Jackie Big Tits being a very derrogatory term. In the third verse, the two are having a fall out and he realises that perhaps she does not like him as much as he does her and is quite harsh to him when she 'speaks her mind'. Then he realises perhaps he is being bullied and manipulated by her motivated by his obsession. note how 'you only go around' changes to 'you cant push me around' showing he has grown stronger and is no longer afraid to lose her. He has seen the light. I know i am probably wrong but just a thought i had. Fantastic song though. best on the album. |
