Joanna Newsom – Sawdust and Diamonds Lyrics 19 years ago
did anyone else think there were a lot of references to taxidermy in it??

"and the little white dove...made with glue, and a glove, and some pliers"

"I will swallow your sadness and eat your cold clay
just to lift your long face"

maybe it am reading it wrong, but they really make me think of taxidermy... maybe like being put on display for people.

"cooed the dove
who was stuffed now with sawdust and diamonds"

Ugly Casanova – Barnacles Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay to all who have any interest in Ugly Casanova! None of these songs are written by Isaac Brock, although Lexington, you are wrong, it is Isaac Brock performing them. Okay so here is what it is: Back in 1998 this guy (who Isaac Brock has refered to as mentally unstable) named Edgar Graham snuck backstage at a Modest Mouse show in Denver. He met the Modest Mouse guys, and revealed that he was a huge fan and that he followed them around on tour. Now this guy Edgar had with him a whole book of song lyrics, that he had written using the pen name "Ugly Casanova". So in 1998 Brock helped him record some of them. Then the guy sorta disappeared. So in 2001 Isaac Brock gathered some of the recordings and lyrics and he and some of his pals (Brian Deck, Tim Rutili, Paul Jenkins, John Orth) recorded the album. They of course called themselves Ugly Casanova. Brock said that they did it in the hopes that Graham would re-surface. And that is that. Pretty cool story if you ask me, even cooler because its TRUE!!!

Destroyer – Painter in Your Pocket Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it refers to a person he is interested in, but doesn't think he has a chance with: "I didn’t stand a chance. I didn’t stand at all." And you sorta get the feeling the person he is talking about doesn't really care about him very much, or maybe doesn't even know who he is: "you couldn't be bothered to say hello, or goodbye"

Loretta Lynn – Have Mercy Lyrics 19 years ago
One of my favourite songs off Van Lear Rose. She wrote it a long time back for Elvis, but she never ended up giving it to him. Cool song though, definately sounds Elvis-ish.

The White Stripes – Have Mercy Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't really know why this song is in here... hmmm..... it's not a White Stripes song. It's a Loretta Lynn song, and Jack plays guitar on though. I don't think the White Stripes have covered it or anything. Anyways I love the song anyways, Loretta Lynn wrote it a long tiome back for Elvis Presley, but she never ended up giving it to him. Then she recorded it and you can hear it on her 2004 album Van Lear Rose (which Jack produced). Great song, it totally sounds Elvis-ish too.

The White Stripes – De Ballit of de Boll Weevil Lyrics 19 years ago
This is the song they usually use to end their shows, they did at least on both the elephant and satan tours. I love it on Under Blackpool Lights, when he asks the crowd to sing along. "Then you'll be happy, I'll be happy, and lord knows Meg'll be happy!" I freakin love this song. (as for you neverheardofhim you probably heard it on blackpool lights)

I think the song is not just about quitting an office job, but about a general desire to lead a more exciting life.

"his voice"? There is no "he" in this song. It's two women singing. Eleanor and Olga. I love the discussion of two kevins in this song.
