| Sufjan Stevens – Rice Pudding Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I don't know why, but I love this song. I love it when the chaotic guitar playing gives way to the relative order of the song and I love how he sings the last line of the song. I imagine this song to be about someone who has just met the love of his life at a benefit concert, and the guitar represents the thoughts of that man as he rehashes the day. Then again, it could just be a weird, silly song. |

| Sufjan Stevens – Opie's Funeral Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I'm sorry to hear that you were color blind, Crystal, but am happy that you can now see in color. This song reminds me of when a few kids died at our school. We were always friendly to each other, but we were never really friends. They died in a car accident one night. I really regreted not having befriended them when I had a chance. |

| Sufjan Stevens – Niagara Falls Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I really like this song. The line "We pretend we are from Africa / If we fall behind / I am brave" reminds me of when I was on the swim team when I was a little kid. I used to think there were sharks in the deep end, so I would swim extra hard there, so that I wouldn't get eaten. When I heard that line in the song, I thought that maybe he was pretending like lions were following their car for some reason. That sounds kind of silly though. | |
| Sufjan Stevens – The Lord God Bird Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think you are exactly right StarRanger. After listening to the Lord God Bird story on NPR, I hope I can give a little insight into the song. Here is my short analysis: In the delta sun, down in Arkansas It’s the great god bird with its altar call This is just referring to the geographical location of the small town. I think the altar call that is mentioned is referring to the tourists and scientists that are coming to the town and reviving, or saving, local businesses. And the sewing machine, the industrial god One woman in the broadcast said “And we have been…praying for an industry.” The discovery of the bird has greatly increased business in the town. Some of the women in the town are sewing souvenir woodpecker items. And the hunters beware, or the fishers fall And paradise might close from its safe flight flawed This is just warning the hunters and fishers to look out for the woodpecker. If they kill the bird, they will be in big trouble. It’s the great god bird through it all The woodpecker was assumed to be extinct back in the forties or fifties and was only recently rediscovered. |
