| Nevermore – Sentient 6 Lyrics | 19 years ago |

It's interesting that they use 'sentient,' since that word implies, you know, self-awareness. Life. Coneman: I dunno if the robot COMES to earth; it sounds more like he's designed by humans, for "convencience" and all. But the rest sounds right. He realizes that we suck... and ERADICATES. >:] But then there's also that sense of him wanting to be, you know, SENTIENT; he wants to be more than a machine. It kinda has the whole Frankenstein thing goin' on... like, the humans created a monster. Rakoro already covered the backwards thing, but you guys should totally try it. My friend and I recorded it and reversed it and it was frickin' awesome. I was pretty scared... hahaha. And I'm pretty sure he says "seven" a bunch of times before (/after) those lines. The way we recorded it, it started out with "seven seven seven." o___O |

I love this songgg. I'm ashamed to admit that I first heard it through the American Idol Karaoke game for PS2, lmao. But I cannot stop listening to this. Anyways, have you guys seen the video? (1) It's some crazy shit; and (2) it reaffirms the "underage love affair" idea we've got goin' on herrre. |

| New Radicals – Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Yeah, the last line is like, "it's so wonderful I feel like... crying, crying, crying, crying, CRYING, DYING, DYING!" I like sacrifice's analysis... and basically, I think the song is about people's cynical nature nowadays, including the singer's own. I don't even think he's really making fun of the hippie girl; I just think he's basically like, "so this is what people are like." The girl's hypocrisy is just another demonstration of how fucked up everyone and everything is. |

I just read through all of these analyses and it's really interesting to see what people have to say about this. I'm another on the "unrequited love" bandwagon. I'm pretty sure most of us can relate to that... [verse] She wants him. My favorite intepretation of "you'll hurt your knees" is that she is begging him or worshipping him; that she is on her knees throwing herself at him in the hopes that he'll love her. He has some feelings for her, or at least leads her on -- "I kissed your mouth and back." He warns her not to count on him; that he is not worth it, and that he will just let her down in the end: "Don't build your world around / volcanoes melt you down." [chorus] He warns her further that he is not right for her. He is "not real"; he is not "what [she] means to [him]"; she doesn't need him. (Even just the words "what I am to you" show that she views him in a distorted, rose-colored light.) And as much as she gives him -- he is acknowledging that she tries SO HARD -- it is not enough for him. (Mountains / sea.) [verse] I'm not sure about "don't throw yourself like that / in front of me." It would make more sense for him to be saying that -- "don't throw yourself AT me." But maybe, instead, it's her telling him not to degrade himself. Maybe he's telling her subtly not to like him, and she's saying "please stop putting yourself down." I love what Cilla said: "your mouth, your back" seems so much more intimate than "your mouth and back." It's like she's really feeling it, while he's just going through the motions. "Don't drag my love around. Volcanoes melt me down." First acknowledgement, as far as I can tell, that she recognizes the hints he's dropping. [chorus] The chorus also works reflexively, with her singing it. "What I am to you is not what you mean to me" still applies, only with the opposite meaning. [end... screw technical terms] This is all just a phase he's going through -- finding himself; finding what is right for him. The whole relationship, or whatever, is just some kind of phase that he really wants to get over and forget about. The disease analogy is kind of confusing, but I like the idea of her being like a disease to him since she's kind of taking over. "Still too young to treat" may mean that it would be risky to try to do anything about it. In the case of a new disease, there's not enough information to try treating/curing it. She is too fragile and vulnerable to just... get rid of. Like a lot of other people on here, I can definitely relate. This hopeless, unreturned admiration on one end; indifference on the other, but the kindness to keep from just letting her [me] down bluntly. I love this song. |

| Bright Eyes – Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and to Be Loved) Lyrics | 19 years ago |

It's songs like this that convince me that Oberst really is as smart as everyone thinks he is. I can relate to almost every line in this song, except for the fact that I'm not a famous singer so the whole "I don't read the reviews" thing doesn't really apply to me... And I've never really considered suicide. But I can see where he's coming from. I love this part: "Well, my teachers, they built this retaining wall of memory All those multiple choices I answered so quickly And got my grades back, and forgot just as easily But at least I got an A And so I don't have them to blame" ...because it's so fucking true. We're all just "learning" on short-term memory. It's like this endless cycle and I don't know if we're doing any more than walking around in circles. The political stuff is subtle and accurate enough so that it's not annoying. And the line "and ambition, I've found, can lead only to failure" pretty much sums up my outlook on life. |

No one else mentioned the word "escape"... but I think this song is a lot about escaping and starting over. Yeah, it's about love, but it's also about getting out. 'I want to take you far from the cynics in this town'... 'We'll cut our bodies free from the tethers of this scene'... He wants to get away, and more importantly, he wants to take HER away. |

Whoa, Xim's explanation is definitely amazing and worth reading. I had always thought of it as being... kind of the opposite. I thought that he was PESSIMISTIC about his life; stuck in a rut, and that "we'll grow old... together" was meant to be ironic, like, "oh God, I can't take much more of this life." :( It's even sadder now that I know what it's really about. |

| Spock's Beard – The Water Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I've been double-commenting a lot; sorry about that. Err... all I've found so far is that Neil Morse says: "The Water" is about being in the womb and thinking you're Godlike and then coming out into the world and being.... well.... rather disappointed. ...Which is pretty much how I perceive the song. It's almost a life story; a 23-minute story of one man's life and its ups and downs. |

Nobody has commented on this? Whaaat?! Mm, I wish I understood more about the song in general, but I don't. Obviously, it can mean a lot of different things, but I'm sure there's one central theme that I'm not smart enough to catch on to. I was expecting other people to have come and explained this, but nooo...! Anyways, I was just gonna comment and say that I LOVE the part in 'FU/I'm Sorry' where all of his emotions just go wild and he's all "FUCK YOUUUUUU!" and then he gets rational for a second and says "If truth were told, I really hate myself. SO FUCK YOU!!!" I was listening to this the other day, after I'd had this huge emotional breakdown-ish-thing, and I could relate SO well. It completely described my mood at that instant. To me, it's like, all of his anger coming out, his hatred towards other people and people in general. And then his insecurities just crash down on him and he realizes that this anger is all directed towards HIM. It's not anyone else. It's not about his parents deserting him or anything else that anyone else has done so much as it is about his own self-hatred. |

| Dream Theater – Space-Dye Vest Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I love this song... possibly my favorite DT ever. The demo by Kevin Moore is amazing, too. The whole song is so enigmatic but it makes so much sense at the same time. I don't know anything that hasn't already been said -- about how Moore fell in love with a girl modeling a space-dye vest in a magazine -- and there are billions of extensive Dream Theater analyses on the internet ('cause that's how DT fans do! xP) so I guess I have nothing worthy to add. But I love how, in the last verse, LaBrie actually sounds kind of happy. "And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend/ but I'll never be open again"... the piano makes it sort of uplifting and maybe even optimistic, despire what the lyrics are saying. I'm not sure if it was supposed to come across that way, though. Edited by YtseJam on September 9 2006, at 05:43PM |

Once you've got the main idea of a shy kid who's afraid to talk to the person he (or she) likes, each line can mean whatever you want it to -- especially if you can relate. I definitely agree about the stalker-esque aspect of it, what with the "I broke into your house last night", but that's probably just an exaggeration of what this kid is feeling. It helps, like, paint the picture of this hopeless and probably unrequited love. Haha, I'm so poetic. Also, the line after "I find it easier to sit and stare" is "than push my limbs out TOWARD you right there", not "TO you right there". OCD. :] |

| Red Hot Chili Peppers – Death of a Martian Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Before I read the other comments, I thought that it was really about the death of an alien. I thought the first few verses were about the humans and their killing of the Martian: "Bear paws and rascal power Watching us in your garage Big girl you ate the neighbor The nova is over." ...and the second half was from the point of view of the aliens, who lost a loved one: "The Martian ends her mission... Let's bow our heads And let the trumpets blow Our girl is gone God bless her little soul." But yeah. The real way is even cooler. xD |
