I disagree. I think the riff would have been lame if it was combined with similar feeling lyrics, but I think the contridiction and riff repeated constantly gives the song a real tired, frustrated, defeated yet soft kind of sound; but, then again, I really do love everything this band put out. |

Exactly, I always compare Zevon's work to Franz Kafka or Fydor Dosteovetsky. Extremely dark humor. When Kafka would read a story most people would take it as a horror story, but Kafka could not stop laughing himself. This song is written in the form that the movie, "American Pysho" was made, majority take it seriously, but it is actually a comedy like Notes from Underground with a few social issues raised but raised through dark humor and classic imagery. Also, Notes from Underground is made famous for its contridictions and not the contridiction between the music and the lyrics. This is a humours piece. |

Geez man, it is just rock n roll. We do not need to overanalyze everything. I'm sorry, but if you're thinking about acceptance or the 1970's punk movement when you hear this song then wow man! You should be an English teacher! The truth is that Zevon was to write a song for the Everly Brothers called the Werewolves of London, and while humming some lines with his guitar player they came up with a diddle and wrote the song. I don't imagine Zevon sitting at his piano pondering acceptance, the glory of the punk movement, or his own significance. Rock stars are not geniuses and not all of them are poets, not every song has a deep meaning or it wouldn't be rock n roll. Great song, doesn't need to be about anything to enjoy it. |
