A Tribe Called Quest – Bonita Applebum Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I just heard this on the radio and I can't understand why "prophylactics" was edited out. Why are we censoring safe sex practices but it's okay to play songs about sex with strippers and skeeting on them in a club? |
The B-52's – Rock Lobster Lyrics | 13 years ago |
hey those three songs STILL get everyone on the dance floor! |
Le Tigre – Fake French Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Umm... I always thought this song was listing all the great things (and sometimes simple or even not so great things) about being a woman. And that it's titled "Fake French" simply because they speak nonsense words at the beginning and end of the song that sound like they're imitating French, but that it's really just nonsense. the new sincerity. I've got - a secret vocabulary. (women know instinctively what we mean and what we're thinking, but men can't seem to figure us out. But we for some reason get one another.) I've got - MIDI in, out, thru. (an electronic musical instrument that le tigre uses) I've got - dialectical sprecstimme. (it's just a way of singing. like how le tigre often sings.) I've got - herm choreography. (?? Standing still?? a herm is a statue..) I've got - a conceptual stunt double. (women are often seen as having "alter-egos" or being somewhat dichotomous) I've got - a deviant scene, I mean. I've got - multiple alliances..... (friends) I've got to move..... I've got - The Gift of Fear. (this line sticks out for obvious reasons) I've got - The Courage to Heal. (this line also. in many cultures, women are seen as natural healers. kids always run to mommy...) I've got - site specificity. I've got - plan "B" ability. (plan B option in birth control. or just always having a plan b in most situations) I've got to move..... oh oh oh oh oh oh oh got to move..... I've got - extensive bibliographies. (read a lot) I've got - flow disruption. (tampons... or birth control) I've got - wildlife metaphores. (relating to wildlife) I've got - post-binary gender chores. |
Broken Social Scene – Romance to the Grave Lyrics | 13 years ago |
does anyone know the name of the female vocalist in the background of this song? thank you. |
Grizzly Bear – Ready, Able Lyrics | 13 years ago |
wow... maybe I'm shallow, but I thought this song was about taking that step into marriage. I figured the lyrics, "I’m gonna take a stab at this/Surely we’ll be alright/Make a decision with a kiss" referred to the proposal and the wedding, and reassuring oneself that you and your wife will be fine and make it alright in life. The lyrics, "five years, countless months and a loan" sealed it for me. I figured they'd been together for 5 years, countless months, and the loan is for their buying a house. So the speaker is wondering if he is ready and able to provide for and start a family ("Hope I’m ready, able to make my own, good home") Again, I could be seeing it only for face value, but that's what stuck out to me. I can't make connections with all the lyrics, which is why I'm doubting myself. |
The Radio Dept. – I Don't Like It Like This Lyrics | 15 years ago |
to me, it sounds like there could be two speakers. they're arguing, or having a tiff. i especially like the second verse when he says, "i can't calm down at all/ panic is what panic feels like" as the first speaker, who's getting kind of pissy and irritable. and then, "can't we just stay silent/ speaking now seems far too violent," as the second speaker's trying to keep him/her calm or to avoid the issue they're fighting about. who knows... |
The Radio Dept. – I Don't Like It Like This Lyrics | 15 years ago |
insight? that's why i come to this website. and always disappointed to find comments saying, "i love this song." "yet another great song from..." geez louise. i'm almost sick of this site. |
Goldfrapp – Deer Stop Lyrics | 15 years ago |
my question is why aren't all the lyrics revealed? not even in the cd jacket. she says at some point "you've arrested me now" or something like that, and it's never written out. |
Zero 7 – Thistles Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i've never heard this song and i have all 3 of their albums! what's that all about? maybe something unreleased? only a UK track? hmmm... |
Modest Mouse – Interstate 8 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
drugs get you nowhere, my friends. absolutely nowhere. you think you're floating in space? you're right where you've been. these lines especially point that out to me. weed, hallucinogens, etc... Spent 18 hours waiting stoned for space I spent the same 18 hours in the same damn place You know that ball has no sides Wind-up anger with the endless view of The ground's colorful patchwork (your hallucinations are nothing but a composite of the anger/ feelings you've had and a seemingly endless object that serves as the backdrop/canvas of your visions.) |
Radiohead – All I Need Lyrics | 16 years ago |
man. i had a really good interpretation, and it got erased..... booooo |
Radiohead – All I Need Lyrics | 16 years ago |
could it be about faith? I am a moth who just wants to share your light |
Gnarls Barkley – Who's Gonna Save My Soul Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i think the lyrics are supposed to be: gettin high cus i feel so low down |
Zero 7 – Crosses Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i think it has to do with Jesus "crosses all over, heavy on your shoulders"-- carrying the cross, and also a representation of our carrying our own burdens. the first verse really makes it clear to me. "don't you know that i'll be around to guide you..." |
TV on the Radio – Blues From Down Here Lyrics | 16 years ago |
my take on it is that it's a song about faith, prayer and devotion. all the troubles and strife we face down here on earth are the blues from down here. the line "with my wet hair, i wipe the blood from off your feet" alludes to the Bible when the woman washes Jesus' feet with her tears and hair. from the depths can mean from the bottom of my heart, from my soul, or from the depths of the hole in which we might be with all our stress and strife "Oh kindess shared Undeserved purest gift, this life you spared" pretty much proves this song is about Jesus. we don't deserve His sacrifice, His life is the purest gift, our lives were spared, saved from eternal death "just stay on your knees" (come on you guys. praying) i love the line, "it's not the last you've heard from me" it's like, "God, you're gonna hear from me again" keeping up that communication supplication= prayer. echo into the void, been received by no one= there are times when you wonder if your prayers are even being heard. you might doubt it. think there's nothing left for me to do but stop my feet and shout about it= pray outloud with such passion ("you" is general) it is possible for musicians who don't belong to the christian music genre to put out spiritual songs expressing their faith. don't think too hard, guys. it's clear |
Blonde Redhead – Heroine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
when i saw them perform this in pomona, kazu started sobbing (tearing up, really) towards the end. can't help but to wonder what that's all about. |
The One AM Radio – Buried Below Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah, i agree with you. it could go so many ways-- he could be talking to a lover, to himself, etc. What if he's (not necessarily the singer, but the speaker) talking to a parent? if i used this for myself, it would be directed towards myself. i'm always moving from place to place hoping to find a fresh start. |
Marvin Gaye – I Want You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i don't think these lyrics are right. i think the first verse is supposed to say: i'll give you all the love i want in return, sweet darling but half a love is all i feel it's too bad, it's just too sad you don't want me now but i'm gonna change your mind someway, somehow and the second verse: one-way love is just a fantasy to share is precious, pure and fair don't play with something you should cherish for life don't you wanna care, (and then, i'm really not sure about the last line) |
The One AM Radio – Buried Below Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i agree. this song is amazing. the strings at the end nearly bring tears. i get like that sometimes if a song is really that beautiful! one question though, who do you think he's talking to? |
Amel Larrieux – Dear to Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i think this song is about the unbreakable, undefeatable, continuous love for one's family and friends... those who keep you grounded, "as gravity is to every human, as the earth is to the trees." dear family and friends keep us connected to reality and grounded. |
Amel Larrieux – Beyond Lyrics | 17 years ago |
once i learned the lyrics, i said to myself, this song is playing at my funeral. (who thinks that, right?) but then looking at them again, i can't help but to feel this song also talks about God's love. it is infinite, it is everywhere. i don't know. i really think it has a lot to do with love continuing even after death, though. like a mother's love. |
Amel Larrieux – Bravebird Lyrics | 17 years ago |
oh and isn't it interesting that such melancholy lyrics are backed up by an uplifting beat. it's almost disguised, veiled. the song could also be perceived as joyous, though. |
Amel Larrieux – Bravebird Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i believe this song might have been inspired by oppressive societies in places like darfur, afghanistan, etc. the story itself, to me, tells of a specific young girl who's suffered tremendously but gathered enough bravery within herself--despite the pain of recalling those memories--to speak publicly about her adversities, resulting in public knowledge and rescue efforts to help other girls. "in a land far away where the sun doesn't spare a soul"-- i imagine across seas, and in the desert "and the twisted traditions have a girl in a stranglehold"-- certain religious and social practices that, as a result, are oppressive toward women "when you shared the secret with the world, you saved another mother's child"-- her speaking out spread knowledge |
Esthero – Dragonfly's Outro Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i love the horns. they add a sense of dreaminess and haziness. they carry the song. and her voice, with the added echoes, just accentuates that floating-in-a-dream effect. one of my personal favorites! |
Zero 7 – Over Our Heads Lyrics | 17 years ago |
perhaps apocalyptic? |
Esthero – Breath from Another Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yes, but what does it mean??? i hate when people just write that they like a song. we figured... otherwise you wouldn't have come to the page. i really have no idea what it's about, and i wish she'd explain her songs, but i guess that just adds to her mystery. it sounds like self-sacrifice, but who knows? |
TV on the Radio – Dreams Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah, i thought it might be about human interaction too. someone is so sucked into society that they're not even human, they don't dream, they don't have feelings, which are blessings to the human race. i don't know... i like the treadmill powertrip idea that was discussed earlier. like, your powertrip is getting you absolutely nowhere, but you just keep on going on about it... neverending, until you're worn out. and i do hear a political voice in this song. definitely relevant. |
TV on the Radio – Staring At The Sun Lyrics | 17 years ago |
in regards to the whole death/orgasm idea, it reminds me of shakespeare's use of the word "die" as a pun on sexual climax. so tvotr's dual meaning is plausible. it makes sense. it's pretty cool. |
Nina Simone – Four Women Lyrics | 17 years ago |
the last name isn't "egypt" it's "peaches." |
Beth Gibbons – Drake Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i think it's about lovers who actually never really knew each other. now it's over. i'd really like to understand all the symbolism though. |
Zero 7 – Somersault Lyrics | 17 years ago |
you know, the first time i heard this song, i thought it was about a father-daughter relationship. the lyrics just seem a little childish (not in a bad way) or child-like. but then, i saw the video, and realized it's about a boyfriend. but then, you know that whole idea that girls are attracted to men that are somewhat similar to their fathers (example of the ideal man...). so now i think it's more of a girl enjoying her boyfriend's personality and presence, because it "feels like home", it brings her back to those feelings she had when growing up. |
Zero 7 – Spinning Lyrics | 17 years ago |
like all literature, in this case poetry, many interpretations can be made, and to deem one wrong is rather close-minded and rude. i don't necessarily agree with the 9/11 interpretation, but i could see this song being used in a film on 9/11. i see its relevance. to me, personally, this song brought me to think about all the negative things that were happening in the short time frame of a month and all the wrong things i was doing, and how much i needed to return to being who i really am, and remembering where i come from. it's like, coming to Christ for forgiveness. "as the world came tumbling down"-- apocalyptic, but it could also be a personal feeling of someone's world caving in. i love music and poetry!!! |
Marvin Gaye – Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think this song is about drug addiction. perhaps marvin gaye's own drug addiction. i love the line: well i know i'm hooked, my friend, to the boy who makes slaves out of men" slaves out of men. yeah, that's what addiction does to you. working and working for no gain, really, tiring yourself out, you're under the control of something/one other than yourself. what you do is merely for "it". strong lyrics. i love marvin gaye. |
Esthero – Beautiful Lie Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i have to tell you guys, i love this song merely for the lyrics. i can relate to just about every line. needless to say, this is simply about heartbreak and disappointment. favorite line: "and i want to be sure you adore me too/ i don't wanna know when it ended for you" cus it always ends at the other end first. |
Sade – Feel No Pain Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think during the time in which this song was written, there was a painful increase in lay-offs and poverty. something like this needed to be sung. it's heart-wrenching, really, when you actually listen to it. the beat intentionally hits hard, just like suddenly losing your job, suddenly struggling, suddenly poor. |
