note that christiansands (kristiansand) is a city in norway. and helsinki of course is in finland... so it's kind of a double echo, met a christian in christiansands, the devil in HELLsinki... both in scandinavia, both vaguely religious-sounding... you can spin out a variety of meanings from that, which is part of what makes good lyrics good. but, anyway that's what those words are, christiansands is a place name. took me like 5 or 10 years to figure that out |

does anybody actually know what the jacks thing means. i get it about the kid's game, but if it's also some sex thing i've never damned heard of it and i wasn't born yesterday. i've tried to google it, looked on urbandictionary, looked here, and i haven't found shit. i mean ok sure, jackin' off is a thing, but nobody says it like that. do they? i don't get it. nobody's posted to this song since 2009 so lol i guess but for the record i'm confused |

this is the most frustrating song in the world because musically it's terrific, and i think the first verse is completely brilliant, and then the rest of the song is borderline incomprehensible gibberish. it had the potential to be one of her best songs, the first time i heard it i was going berserk with joy, and then right around the peanut butter trapeze hand everything just goes haywire and never recovers. i get some of the things she's trying to say after that point but for me none of it really comes together into "good lyrics" mode. it makes me mildly upset |

Three, six, nine
The goose drank wine
The monkey chewed tobacco
On the streetcar line
The line broke
The monkey got choked
And they all went to heaven in a little row boat |

thom yorke really has a knack for writing songs that can be about love and global warming at the same time. that's probably why he hates it when people ask him to explain what they mean. |

frag - ok. i actually agree with you that the song isn't about bush, as such. but on the other hand the suggestion that someone who doesn't live in america has no reason to have an opinion about bush struck me as kinda ludicrous. america being the most powerful country in the world and all of that jazz does have the side effect of giving everybody living in said world some stake in what actions it takes.
a specific example: thom's position on, say, global warming is well known. the US is responsible for - i believe - about 25% of global carbon emissions. yet bush continues to act as though nothing is happening.
i mean even if you think bush is right and yorke is wrong, you have to admit, it's a reason to have an opinion.
and hippie morons are in the majority because we're awesome. it's ok, though. we love you. |

will all love to my physics friends out there i would prefer not to think too hard about the science of photons when looking at this song.
i don't think of it as a breakup song, personally. we're still using the present tense - you *are* the bluest light. the relationship still exists. it just might be a little bit unclear to the people involved exactly what it is. "just tell me you cannot sleep." boyfriend? girlfriend? bluest light. |

it's "they" go back to work on monday. not "then". i wouldn't micromanage but it kind of makes a huge difference in the meaning of the song. |

"Nassim Taleb goes on [in Edge] to ask and discuss some very important questions: 'The puzzling question is why is it that we humans don't realize that we don't know anything about the significant brand of randomness? Why don't we realize that we are not that capable of predicting? Why don't we notice the bias that causes us not to realize that we're not learning from our experiences? Why do we still keep going as if we understand them?'" |
