i too believe that this song is about a girl w/ a hearing loss. in my opinion, the word "elegy" is perfect for the title. not many people know this, but people who have a hearing loss, especially if it's an acquired one and not a congenital one, often do go through a sort of mourning stage after receiving their diagnosis. its like something that made them who they are actually has "died" in a way. parents of deaf children can often go through this as well. so, i think that the word elegy was a spectacular choice for the title. ok, ill get down off my pedestal now. i cant help it, i am in the field of speech-language pathology & audiology, so this song really strikes a chord w/in me whenever i hear and figured my 2 cents might be worth sharing. |

glad i'm not the only one who thought of Big Fish right away :). the trumpet part right after the lyrics "trumpets play sick lullabies" is one of my favorite parts in the song. i think the most exciting part of the entire song, however, is right after the lyrics "everybody stop!" it gives me chills. i saw them with P!ATD and The Dresden Dolls as well, just this past July i think. i had been into them for a bit before seeing them at that show though, but seeing them live solidified my love for them. im trying to get a hold of their first album, but none of the local record stores have it, sadly. one of these days ill get my hands on it! i felt bad for The Dresden Dolls at that show, or, basically for the whole tour. some of the ridiculous P!ATD fans just didnt "get" them i guess. but was it necessary to boo them? and treat them like crap? i think thats just terrible. theyve been in the game longer than Panic! and have developed a style that should be respected or at least thats my 2 cents =P. to me, they were the highlight of the show even though they werent headlining. ok, enough rambling! |

maybe my mind is too polluted by pop culture, but i immediately had the movie "Big Fish" come to mind when i first heard this song. it may just be me though, i'm not too sure. i just remember from the movie the one scene where time stopped and it was at a carnival and Ewan McGregor's character saw the girl whom he loved. it was a fabulously artistic scene, hence why is it has stuck with me. i just wonder if anyone else thought of that when they heard this song. |
