the speaker in the song didn't know that the relationship wasn't going so great, then is just blew up in his face, it all fell through, then everyone he knew seemed to be waiting on the side lines to - not help him at all- so he'd just rather run the other way instead of trying to figure out why it ended, he wants to be away from the commosion of it all, he just decides to think of it as nothing, and to not care (apathy) Then his friends make it clear that they think he's in over his head, like he may be trying still to figure out why it didn't work out, like the girl has her mind set on it being over, there's nothing he can do about it, 8 seconds left in overtime, may be like there is only a short time before we all know it is over for good, but he still wants to hang on, cuz she's on his mind,his friends say.. I wish you were a stranger I could disengage-- wishing he didn't love her enough to keep trying to make it right, just say that we agree it is over and then never change how we always were... soften a bit until we all just get along-- lets just get the fighting and the disagreements out of the way now and get along in the end. That's disregard (never mind what I just said) cuz I know that's not how it works, he thinks the girl will just replace him or find another friend and get rid of him-- then their plan wouldn't turn out the way he likes it to... --as you lose the argument in a cable car hanging above as the canyon comes between... could mean that he knows he'll lose the argument either way, that they just have too much "space" between them to make it right (canyon) And suddenly I become a part of your past I'm becoming the part that don't last I'm losing you and its effortless That part is just him being sad that he lost all control, and he won't be important to the girl anymore, that their relationship won't last or come back, that he is just going to stop trying- because it does no good. Without a sound we lose sight of the ground In the throw around feeling "dizzy" from all the arguments losing sight of what really matters (happiness) Never thought that you wanted to bring it down he never knew that she was ready to give it all away until she did I won't let it go down till we torch it ourselves so he says- lets just end it now, and ruin it forever, because I'm not letting it fail unless it's my own decision-my fault -our fault and even when he ends it on his own decision, he's still in over his head, because she is still on his mind and he just can't stop. That's another way you could think of some of those, but I also believe that all of the ones before could be right too, because it is a song, they write it to get as many people hooked as they can... they make more money that way... great song, no matter how you interpret the lyrics |

| this song is amazing to me probably mostly becaues i feel like my boyfriend may be at that point where being free is worth what he'd be leaving behind, and it's sad because I am not brave enough to ask him... I am too afraid he'd agree and say it was goodbye time... that is why this song touches people the way it does, because it takes a lot of balls to say, "if you want to leave then I will let you go" it is a major statement that many people should make, but its just all to hard for those of us so madly in love... songs like this just make you hope the writer is making it up | |
