you're right. numbers are significant in tool's music, all part of the synesthesia i guess. i have two questions: does wings & rosetta stoned include both parts? where does lipan conjuring fit in? thanks for the insight. |

good lyricists will create from personal experiences BUT compose lyrics in a way that gives them multiple meanings that come down to interpritation and the personal experiences of the listener. to me this song is about losing my faith, leaving the church and dealing with loss. particularly these lyrics:
"you told me to love you when i did. traded my emotions for a contract to commit. and when i got away i only kept my scars. the other me is gone, now i dont know where i belong. we were never alive and we wont be born again. i will never survive with dead memories in my heart." this song and sulfur seem to be connected. |

i agree with your interpritation. now that i've chosen to not run away from the various gods and demons of our collective imagination, i now know where i stand on the topic of religion and spirituality and it's both liberating and scary. because of that experience these lyrics and the lyrics in 'dead memories' resonate with me personally. the 'breathing in sulfur' line and the way it's sung does seem to be a reference to gehenna (hell) |

"Misanthropy is a generalized dislike, distrust, disgust, contempt and hatred of the human species, human nature, or society. A misanthrope is someone who holds those views and feelings. The word's origin is from Greek words μῖσος (misos, "hatred") and ἄνθÏωπος (anthrÅpos, "man, human being")." In other words 'PEOPLE=SHIT' This song is all about misanthropy. In my opinion this is the misanthropic anthem and being a misanthrope I should know. The title of this song reminds me of Tyler Durten referring to his people as 'made up of the same decaying organic matter as the rest of the world.' An individual or group of individuals can be intelligent, insightful and contribute something worthwile to society however when you witness the idiocy, ignorance, intolerance and blind conformoty of a herd mentality, particularly a mob mentality, you realise what people as a whole really are.

| Slipknot – Iowa Lyrics

considering how the slipkot guys feel about their hometown, i think iowa may be another name for hell. the song is audial represention/soundscape of that place; a cold and desolate nightmare realm with the lyrics making it a brilliantly twisted love song. the killer is singing this song to his 'love';someone he's just killed. i'm not a murderer but im assuming that killing someone is the most extreme and personal experience you can have with an individual and this song reflects that experience(love). the killer seems to be in conflict with himself considering the part where one voice is saying 'it tears us apart' and another voice is screaming 'shut up!'. also the singing parts have two vocal recording being played in sync but that may just be for effect. there's a part in the song where he keeps repeating 'oh god, oh god' which seems to be a 'moment of clarity' where what he's done ha hit him and for a moment he can't deal with it, adding to the inner conflict. the final line 'you will live forever' seems to be sarcastic considering the religious belief in eternal life and assuming the victim took these beliefs to the grave, they will now 'live forever'. there is also the possibility that the 'victim' in this song is symbolic. seeing as corey was naked, vomiting all over himself and cutting himself with broken glass when recording the vocals the 'killer' may be having a psychotic episode or be possessed in this song. anyway this song has multiple themes and meanings which all come down to interpritation and that is the mark of a great and ageless work of musical art.(love)

Man it's been a long time since I checked out this thread and still there is no revalation of a hidden meaning in this song. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this song is similar to (-) Ions:- an ambient track with a meditative effect and nothing more. lvledusa (Pg7)wrote something about 'Hemispheric Synchronisation Technique' and that also seems plausible. I think JadeDragon (Pg10) is right and the spoken word is VASISHTHA seeing as Tool have had a Hindu influence in their work before and after 3 years that's what it sounds like to me. |

This is another song that is very tongue in cheek. my fave line is "u made me an offer that i can refuse cuz either way i get screwed, counter proposal i go home and jerk off, uh!" Classic! As for the line "u dont know what ur worth, it isnt much" it's interesting that the human body in raw materials is worth about 98cents. In the line "im oneofakind" the guitar speaks which really tripped me out at first. btw I think it should be "it's true honey i lied" instead of "its truly a lie" I love the guitar work from 'diamonds in shit' to 'jerk off'

Ok, I'm pretty sure the lyrics in brackets should be "I will eat you" It's good to see QOTSA make another song about canibalism (Mosquito Song). There are always a number of interpritations of songs but I'll just stick with this one. I have to admit I saw the clip when I first heard this song so that has affected my interpritation. Anyway, "I will eat you" is a double entendre referring to cannabilism and cunnilngus. This song is a mix of cannabilism, hardcore sex and general overindulgence.
That's my take. |

This song like others on the album is very tongue in cheek so it's hard to take it too seriously. It might just be me but the line 'turning on the screw' creates a rather nasty image if u catch my drift. It sounds there are two or even several voices singing at once so it probably is Homme and Lanegan on the track. My fave part is the instrumental bridge part that builds up to the stereo effect. Funkalicious! |

I went to repurchase NIN's "The Fragile" and I was wearing A Tool T shirt at the time. That is when the guy behind the counter suggested I may like this album. I had never even heard of them so FOBP was my first taste of PT, and this is high quality music for sure. I'm even more amazed at their discography. Another 90s band survived! Does anyone know where I can get there other albums? I live in Sydney. |

I've had this theory for a while now. I don't think this song is about Judith's hypocrisy, I think it IS judith calling out these hypocrites. Think about it, this song comes in after 'Wings' and Judith Marie was most likely a headstrong and forthcoming person. (shaking her fist at the gates) |

Btw, thanks for the link Depeche Mod3. It's interesting MJK brought up the 'whirling dervishes'. Ancient civilizations would gather together in caves and after hours of chanting and drumming they would tap into their unconcious minds, entering these trances and having visions. These visions then became the world's mythologies. All of this from the subconcious and unconcious mind. Perhaps Tool do the same... |

MJK Isn't condemming people for buying lattes. The actual line is "Fret for your latte" (Being a caffeine addict I can relate to that) Anyway what he meant by that line, as well as the others that follow, was that the LA lifestyle (lattes, pilots, lawsuits etc) will be pretty hard to live when floating around in Arizona Bay. He is saying "Fret for your ..." because soon it will all be gone. |
