im not certain the song refers to just the soldiers, but also the public in general who don't question their government's agenda, but rather blindly follow what they say, not protesting or questioning simply doing as they are told. |

Iv heard two versions of this song, one where the chorus line is "the red flag waving never meant the same" and the other where the chorus line is "we dont need them". Odd, the former is on the album i have, the latter on the soundtrack to Burnout Revenge |

Its a song about being a soldier and dying while fighting to protect his country and the girl he loves.
more specifically i just get this really strong feeling that hes singing about dying on the beaches of Normandy in WW2, "a black and white print of a face" is obviously a black and white photo, hinting at a historic setting, and the whole chorus just conjures images of the D-Day beach landings. |
