just a correction: it's "kiss you through the bars of orien" not "bars of a rhyme". orien is a consellation of stars. makes more sense considering that there are a lot of connotations about stars in this song. :o) |

I think the song almost sounds as though it's a mother singing about her daughter but they are not close. (Going, Going, Gone) – The daughter’s left home Still hooked on cellophane, hangin' round the mall and all. – The daughter is still acting like a teenager even though she’s 23 as duly noted later in the song Each penny numbs the pain, sends you gently for the fall – The daughter is still depending on retail therapy rather than actually dealing with her problems I followed you last night, I saw you turn your lights out I knew it wasnt right, – The daughter is having sex with some guy and perhaps the family is religious and that’s why the daughter left; because she doesn’t agree with their religious views I watched in fear and doubt – The mum doesn’t want to believe it’s true It's gotten to be that way – They don’t talk anymore (Going, Going, Gone) What did you do today? (Going, Going, Gone) Look good in that red dress, I bet the boyfriend's happy – The retail therapy and the boyfriend thing tying in together but there is a certain disapproving in this line. The ‘look good in that red dress’ implies that the daughter is maybe too skinny and that’s why she is using retail therapy. Anorexia? Your face is scarred with age, - Anorexia again? I think it's about a guy who in his heart knows that it's over with his girlfriend and he even wants it to be over but can't seem to get the courage to leave her. maybe they've been together for so long that he doesn't know what to do without her. and then she breaks it off with him and he's lost but relieved at the same time hence the: "I can tell as you turn, I smell the sulfur so clear And fire's a beautiful sound" he knows it's finally over but the burning of their bridges and the end of their relationship is like a relief to him. a beautiful thing. it was exactly like that with me and my ex. neither of us wanted to be in the relationship anymore and we both knew how each other felt but we just didnt know how to end it. but once it was over and we went our seperate ways, i was happier than i'd ever been. i think that's what the song is about. especially the: "Incinerate whats left of this And torch the part of me that's you" that's the whole letting go thing. beautiful song |

i believe that this song is meant to go with the song 'Sam's Town'. on one hand in 'sam's town' he is saying that he really wants to leave and even though in 'this river is wild' he still wants to leave and his father or someone is telling him to leave this deadbeat town, he's remembering all of the good things about it and the good times he has had there. "But you know I could stay here all night and watch the clouds fall from the sky." he's saying there that although he could stay there forever and that would be easy, he knows he has to leave and follow his dreams. i lived in Darwin in australia for abt 7 yrs and was in a really fucked up crowd and even though i knew they were bad for me and that i was ruining my life up there, one of the hardest things for me was calling my dad who was living overseas and telling him that i had to get the hell out of there. even now i still get tempted to go back even though i hate that town and have severed all ties with my old crowd, i know how easy it would be to go back to that lifestyle but then i look at the reality that if was ever to return i would go absolutely nowhere in life and i wouldn't be able to live with myself if that happened. i believe that's what this song is about: the whole, knowing that you have to leave and not overly wanting to but knowing that if you are going to be happy, that you really need to. |

This song is definitely about homosexuality. i dont agree with what the bible says and i have no problem with homosexuality. this song is about how people still frown upon it though and the song is saying how the church doesnt agree with it but by writing it from the church's perspective it makes you take the side of the gay person. i mean look at it: who do you carry the torch for my young man?- who do you love?males/females? do you believe in anything?- catholics from upon homosexuality so they’re saying if you believe in god you will stop being gay. do you carry it around just to burn things down?- “are you being gay just to hurt and destroy everyone?” meet me tonight on the turnpike, my darling- the guys lover 'cause we believe in everything,- a go at the church saying that yes they do believe.
