| Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Considering how on the nose the lyrics are, I'm impressed with the subtlety of the video: lots of suggestion, very little nudity. | |
| Jay Farrar – Voodoo Candle Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
To me this song brings to mind a general sense of being "lost" or jaded in some way, as though it takes faith (maybe even superstition) to convince yourself that things will eventually become clear: "scattered along the way must be some understanding." I have a feeling I'm one of the 12 or so people who remember this song's brief radio play...I think I remember it because its meaning resonated with me when I did hear it. I was nearly at the end of college at that point (caught between two worlds, if you will) and about to run across a serious quarter-life crisis. |

| INXS – Taste It Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I like it too...but what is it about exactly? I guess something about appreciating life's joys, trying to make a difference in the world, trying to find your place in the world...possibly a religious overtone? | |
| INXS – Never Tear Us Apart Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"We all have wings but some of us don't know why.." I think in the context of the other lyrics this is him saying something like, "we have this amazing connection...some people will never experience (or maybe never allow themselves to experience) love this powerful. Those people will never come between us for that reason." |

| Sixpence None the Richer – Kiss Me Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Someone commented here that this song reminds them of people at summer camp...well, when I was 15 and my (now) husband was 16, we did meet at summer camp, and we did actually dance under the moonlight with music playing in the background, and we wandered on trails through the woods...that was where we kissed for the first time, when we were absolutely sure no one was looking. So indeed, the imagery invoked in these lyrics is real!! |

| The Bags – Cavemen Rejoice Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I kept hearing it in the background on the game and wondering what it was until I had enough money to unlock a song. Definitely one of the best (if not the best) of the bonus songs. The lyrics are kind of silly, though... | |
| Sophie B. Hawkins – Only Love (The Ballad of Sleeping Beauty) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song makes me think of when I experienced the moment of ephiphany that I was staring into the eyes of my future husband...neither of us said anything but we both knew it (and he didn't propose until 5 years later) but my thoughts kind of followed a a similar train of thought to this song. | |
| New Order – Regret Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
It sounds to me like the narrator here _is_ regretting something. On the one hand, there's a life he's left behind ("maybe I've forgotten the name and address of everyone I've ever known"), maybe because the people in his old life, for whatever reason--and not a good one--didn't approve of his current relationship ("you used to be a stranger, now you are mine"). On the other hand, he's not totally satisfied with the current state of affairs either, not because he wants to go back to the old life, but because there are things he hasn't done yet because of the current situation ("you may think that I'm out of hand, that I'm naive, I'll understand," and of course, "just wait till tomorrow"). This could be one of several things: a guy that ran away from home because of a girl and is now in a bad state of affairs financially, someone who gave up a high-paying job and took a huge risk, or, yes, a guy who got hooked on drugs and is slowly losing touch with reality and in denial about it. Whatever its interpretation, there is something haunting about the music under the lyrics, and whenever I hear it I start thinking about either the past or the future. |

| Oingo Boingo – Dead Man's Party Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song always makes me think of that scene in Master and Margarita where Satan (Woland) is having a big party and all these famous dead people show up--I want to say one of them actually does have coins on his eyes; maybe that's why I made the connection...because who else would put together 80s music and Russian lit? :-) | |
| Oingo Boingo – Dead Man's Party Lyrics | 19 years ago |

The first time I heard this on the radio it was stuck in my head for days until I finally had to go out an find the CD. Silly me; I had no idea this is where Danny Elfman came from. That explains why this music is so good. I love how they work in a reference to the old custom of offering a toll for the crossing of the Styx... |

| Peter Gabriel – That Voice Again Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Conscience. You can only go on for so long with your brain having a war with itself...usually it's better to go with what your conscience says though. | |
| Peter Gabriel – Don't Give Up Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think anyone who has ever actually experienced unemployment--whether in Britain in the 80s or in America in the early 2000s--knows exactly what this narrator is talking about. On the flip side, no matter how much you try to comfort someone in that situation, it's almost impossible. But after experiencing (warning: buzzword alert) my own "quarter-life crisis" combined with a bad job market and then watching my husband go through it, I particularly like the last line: "I believe there's a place, there's a place where we belong." | |
| Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dani California Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
4everinlove-- The guy who wrote the lyrics says he is actually talking about a character here, a girl who "representes every girl he's ever dated." Still, the first thing I noticed about this song was the play on state names--it's like they tried to work in as many as possible, as though to contrast California from the rest of them. Or maybe the order they mention them is supposed to indicate this character's physical journey from birth until death: born in the deep south, moved eastward to find work but had a very under-appreciative boss, ran from that but then got herself into trouble in the midwest and had to run to the west coast to hide (where she probably spent most of her life, and presumably where our narrator met her), and then had to flee again from some kind of trouble but didn't manage to escape. Of course, I could just be reading way too much into it. |

| Yes – Changes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"A clear design on your liberty" refers to the person who said the "one word" (the word being "changes," of course) in order to imply that he/she wants freedom. I say this because anytime someone is about to break "relationship" news to you they always preface it with something a lot like the first line of this song--"I'm moving through some changes." This was, for instance, how my parents explained to me that they were about to get a divorce. But I'm getting off track--I just wanted to say I love the intro to this song with the tumultuous rhythm and irregular time signature, which helps set the mood of the song with its powerful lyrics. I don't think the modern listener of pop music has the patience for this type of thing anymore...songs today are all less than 3 minutes long. |

| Shivaree – Goodnight Moon Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Though I doubt this is meant to be taken too seriously (the Hitchcock imagery interpretation seems apt) it reminds me of a friend of mine who was commenting one night that she hates sleeping alone when her b/f is out, because then no one is there to protect her from "the big, bad scary predator who finds me crunchy and good with ketchup." I think all of us let our minds get carried away like that sometimes...this song is a reminder of that. And I agree with weezergirl also--very sexy. |

| Sting – If You Love Somebody Set Them Free Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Certainly, this is a song about allowing the people you love to make choices, even if those decisions don't always benefit you. Personally, though, it always reminds me of the liberation I felt upon breaking up with a guy who was irrationally jealous of me--of my having other friends, talking to any other guy, or making career decisions that might cause me to move away. |

| Tom Petty – Waiting For Tonight Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Agreed!! One of my favorites of his that never really took off. The meaning seems obvious at first, a guy who's lonely and a little scared to jump into things, but now it's all finally about to go somewhere--maybe even a proposal. Or, you could interpret it as a couple who has had a fight and a resulting long period of hiatus, and he's about to go apologize and let it go. This one is a little out there, but something ominous about the women in the background saying "goodnight love" made me wonder at one point if it's a guy who's already married but unhappy and feels trapped, and he's actually singing about a lover with whom he's about to run off. |

| Peter Gabriel – Steam Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
If you watch the video to this song, it is very much all about sex, more so even than sledgehammer. It's a woman who knows everything, and a guy who knows nothing except he knows everything about this woman (well put, Syndicate). Definitely one of PG's best--it was popular for a reason. Of course, I'm a fan of most of his stuff. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Soul Meets Body Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I've seen posts talking about love, and those talking about spirituality...I think the whole point of the song is BOTH; i.e., soul meets body. My husband (who is both a fairly spiritual person and not someone who dated a lot) said to me once a long time ago that before me he often thought of life as "doing my time" until heaven. Not that life was bad or depressing, it was more just like purgatory. When he fell in love, it was like a sudden realization that there was a lot more to life than he gave it credit for, and maybe life is its own kind of spiritual gift, but having me here was a big part of that for him. So I think a lot of people here have been circling around the same idea about this song--that love for someone can open your eyes to the beauty of what we have here, and also lead you to hope that when your loved one dies, you die at the same time so you don't have to live with just "soul" or just "body." |

| Peter Gabriel – Kiss That Frog Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I saw in an interview once that this song is actually about a young girl coming to terms with her own sexuality. Thus, the "frog" isn't supposed to represent a person so much as some part of herself. | |
