| Against Me! – Thrash Unreal Lyrics

Fantastic song, though I think it's tremendously sad. It reminds me of the girl from the Descendents' "Bikeage," all grown up. SHE may not "change anything for the world," but you wonder who she's hurt? (Hence the "no mother ever dreams ..." lines.) My biological father was a junkie who eventually died of an overdose (in his 50s), and it's impossible to overstate how many people he hurt with his addiction and irresponsibility. |

Words to the intro (from the WWI song "Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty"):
Take me back to dear old Blighty!
Put me on the train for London town!
Take me over there,
Drop me ANYWHERE,
Liverpool, Leeds, or Birmingham, well, I don't care! |

I heard Ben sing this live at a recent concert. He asked for suggestions of a musical style from the audience -- "porno" was request. And sure enough, he made it sound just like a song from a '70s porn flick. |

| Nirvana – Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle Lyrics

A customer at a bookstore I once worked at asked if we had the book "Shadowland," about Frances Farmer. I recognized her name from this song (never knew what it was about) and found the book. She was a fascinating person -- very rebellious and outspoken for a woman of her time -- and led an extremely tragic life. |

This was the first song I ever heard by the Descendents, and one of the first punk songs I ever heard, period. It completely changed the way I thought about music. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Song of Joy Lyrics

This is a very chilling song...I think the meaning is clear (it's a story about a man whose family was murdered and who now walks the world alone). The lyrics, however, don't convey the utter desolation of the song. |

This seems to be about a woman with an unwanted pregnancy. She was pressured into sex and ended up pregnant and, presumably, alone. This isn't the way she imagined it; instead of a "dream child" she has "a nightmare born in a borrowed bed." |
