The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned) Lyrics 16 years ago
I hate to say it, but I don't think Margaret gave birth at all. The timeline is shaky as all hell, but I don't think she's more than a couple of months along by the end. The child most likely died with her and William. (And where would the baby go if it did live? Taken by the Queen like its father?...)

The Decemberists – Margaret in Captivity Lyrics 16 years ago
This song kinda makes me nervous. Along with "Having clamped her innocent fingers in fetters", I think that, rather than just restrain her (fetters=cuffs), the Rake beat her so severely that she was too weak to struggle. Literally all she could do was call for help. Argh.

"Clipped of kickstand"... while the feel of the songs make me think that the Rake broke her fingers/legs so she can't run away, a kickstand is basically just a support. Translation: I have taken you far from any support/protection, and you're at my mercy.

The Decemberists – The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't quite agree with the theory that William is Isaiah, though I do think he may have been either dead, crippled, injured, dying, or some combination of the above when the Queen found him. If he was a crippled baby that would be why he was abandoned, actually. "The miseries that hounded you/And I gave you motion" is the Queen reminding him how she healed his deformity/injury.

The Queen is very reminiscent of how the fae are characterized, also known as the Fair Folk (if you use their actual names or unkind words you might summon them -- also why the Queen isn't named through the album). Think Titania and Oberon and A Midsummer Night's Dream: Selfish, needy, capricious, and no understanding of humanity or human relationships. It's natural for a mother to be protective of her son, and be upset that her little boy is becoming independent/in danger of getting his heart broken. It's NOT natural to be grasping after your son (most likely a fully grown young man) and sullenly reverse-Oedipusly jealous of his lady-love.

The fae are also very prone to kidnapping babies and transforming people and making deals that go very very bad for the other guy... I don't think the Queen is necessarily the Queen of Fairies, but pretty similar.

Also, Shara Worden is freaking amazing.

Tori Amos – Sweet Sangria Lyrics 18 years ago
There's a link with the Scarlet's Walk song: The idea of the narrator chasing after Scarlet, who (according to a quote from Neil Gaiman) could be a woman, but could be a trail of blood ("I ask you, give me a bloodless road..."), or it could be the land. Remember that the native Americans were also referred to as "red Indians." Sangria's a blood-red wine punch. This song needs more thought...

Tori Amos – Mrs. Jesus Lyrics 18 years ago
Interesting reference with the Morning Star, i.e. Lucifer. Not sure what that means within the song. But I'm certain the song's about Mary Magdalene.

Tori Amos – I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics 18 years ago
Tidbit: In the mini-story Neil Gaiman wrote for this song (he wrote a story for each of the songs on Strange Little Girls, it's published in the book Fragile Things), "Monday's Child," it's told from the perspective of an officer that had to go into a shot-up school and find the bodies.

The song itself is cheesy when the Boomtown Rats sing it, but Tori makes it more sinister. Eeee.

Liz Phair – Perfect World Lyrics 19 years ago
"No need for Lucifer to fall if he'd learn to keep his mouth shut"... This line is strange. Lucifer, rebel angel who was thrown out of heaven. The narrator links herself to being a rebel, whether through her appearance (not being cool, tall, etc) or behaviour, but so long as she keeps quiet she can stay with the "you" she's referring to? Makes sense when the girls in the "you"'s world are described as more than mortal.

R.E.M. – The Wrong Child Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh boy- why does this song remind me of David Firth animations? When you really look at the song it starts to become so much more unnerving...

It could even be an -adult- that's disturbed, that has a child's mind. He sits in the park, helpless and made fun of by children.
