Buddy Holly – Rave On Lyrics 14 years ago
The version I have has two other verses at the start, after the first two opening lines, it goes:

Rave on, it's a crazy feelin'
I know it's got me reelin'
When you say 'I love you'
Rave on

The way you dance and hold me tight
The way you kiss and say goodnight
Rave on, it's a crazy feelin'
I know it's got me reelin'
When you say 'I love you'
Rave on

And then it goes into the verse with 'so glad that you're revealin'.

Yo La Tengo – Little Eyes Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song too, but I think it's about a teenager. A mother or father singing to their teenage son or daughter. The parent is worried about the risks their child is taking and the way they're living their life, but there's a sense of acceptance, as though they know there's really nothing to do about it.
What made me think this is the lyrics about going out at night then sneaking back in a sleeping all day, and also "little eyes are open but they don't see very far" seems to describe the teenage condition of egotism.
I might be completely wrong, but that's just what I got from it.

Matty Pop Chart – Thailand Lyrics 16 years ago
The bit about the tiny bits of snow refers to fruit carts in Thailand, they're made of glass so everyone can see what inside, and they're filled with shaved ice that looks like snow to keep the fruit cold, and vendors push the carts along the streets. I don't know about the bit with the ladies though.
I love this song though, and I think the lyrics are great.

The Guild League – Siamese Couplets Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh my god I love this song so much, it makes me so homesick for Thailand.
I read somewhere the guys from The Guild League actually met and got together in Thailand.
To me, this song just sums up so many little, everyday things about the country to build up a big picture and a feeling of the place.
For anyone who hasn't been there: believe me, none of this is made up, I have seen and done almost of all of the things described here myself.
I think this is a love song for a country.

Leonard Cohen – Famous Blue Raincoat Lyrics 17 years ago
First of all I would like to say that this has been the most interesting and intriguing discussion that I’ve read about a song on this site, or probably ever. I just couldn’t go without leaving a comment, and saying what I agree and disagree with.
I’m also going to refer to the other man as ‘the brother’, although I doubt it really was his brother (incidentally, does anyone know if Leonard Cohen has a brother? I did a search and every site seems to say the exact same thing about his early life; a single paragraph that doesn’t mention siblings).
So obviously the song’s written in the form of a letter, and the first verse describes the setting in which he’s writing it. That’s pretty straightforward.
The second verse suggests that some time has passed since he’s last seen the brother. “Building your little house in the desert...living for nothing now”, says to me that the brother has isolated himself, maybe Cohen doesn’t even know where he is. Perhaps when he says “I hope you’re keeping some kind of record”, it’s Cohen’s way of subtly disagreeing with this lifestyle, that it’s pointless, and if you’re going to do it then you might as well keep a record to have something to show for it.
“Jane came by with a lock of your hair” explains why Cohen is sitting up writing this at four in the morning. Even though I agree with what most of sidebeard and malsum said, this is one point I have to correct. In a literary context, a lock of hair is something you give someone to remember you by. So when Jane came by with a lock of hair, I don’t think she actually had a lock of hair (yes, that would be incredibly insensitive, not to mention a little bit creepy), I think she came by with memories. So they got to talking about this man who they were once friends with, and that resulted in this letter.
What seagull said about the brother taking drugs makes a lot of sense to me (I don’t know enough about Scientology to understand that analogy); “did you ever go clear” meaning ‘did you get clean?’ and it fits in with the brother’s description in the next verse. I disagree with sidebeard about the length of the affair between Jane and the brother. If what C & J were talking about (the proverbial lock of hair) was the night when he “planned to go clear”, then it was just one night. It went like this:
The brother decided to “go clear” whatever that meant it was obvious he was going to make a big change in his life, and he wanted a woman to share it with. He “went to the station to meet every train”, this might mean he was literally hoping to meet a specific woman, or maybe he was just trying to meet someone (the “every train” bit backs this up). Either way, he didn’t find anyone, so instead he turns up and seduces Cohen’s girlfriend. And they broke up because of it. It says “the last time we saw you”, so neither Cohen nor Jane have seen the brother since, so I think it was just the one night.
The way it says “she was nobody’s wife” makes me think it was Jane that ended the relationship; that the brief fling had made her realise that she was unhappy with Cohen.
While he’s writing the ‘letter’, Jane wakes up. So even though they’re not together anymore, they’ve slept together again.
The next verse shows that both C & J have moved on. Jane “sends her regards”, probably the most impersonal thing she could possibly say, Cohen ‘guesses’ he misses him, and ‘guesses’ he forgives him, it doesn’t sound like he’s given him much thought at all until this night. And in hindsight, he’s glad that it happened anyway, because Jane is happier for it.
“If you ever come by here for Jane or for me, your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.” I agree with malsum that the “enemy” is Cohen’s emotions, not just jealousy, but the anger he felt towards his friend. It was probably this anger that drove the brother away in the first place, but he’s not angry or jealous anymore, and Jane can do what she likes, be with whoever she likes, so he’s saying that there’s no need for the brother to continue isolating himself from them.
The last line, I think, is proof that this song is extremely intimate, serious and personal. There are countless songs and poems that have been written in first person and directed at someone, but to actually sign your own name at the end, says that this is real.

Ben Gibbard – They Don't Know About Us Lyrics 17 years ago
Ben covered this song beautifully.

CletusJ- a cover of a song is not a blatant rip off- it's a cover.

Obviously you don't know who Ben Gibbard is, and you shouldn't go round calling people you don't know talentless hacks, because then you get people who you don't know calling YOU stupid.

Which you are.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics 19 years ago
this is my favourite song off plans, i love it. i just saw death cab the other day in melbourne, australia, and this song was the first song in the encore, ben came out by himself and played it, and the ENTIRE crowd sang along with him, then just went wild when he finished. it was one of the more beautiful moments in life.

i don't think it's about purgatory, i mean he states in the song that he doesn't believe in catholocism anymore, because he doesn't believe that fear is the root of all human emotions, which is an awfully catholic way to look at the world. so why would he believe in purgatory if he's not a catholic?
