| I think you're spot on with this. That's about the gist of what I was thinking, but you tied all the ends together too. | |

| Sounds like the story of a love that shouldn't have been given up on. So full of regret. | |
| The Milk Carton Kids – Maybe It's Time Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
These are the lyrics as posted on The Milk Carton Kids' website, but I swear that he says "Maybe it's time for me to tell you I CAN'T be without you anymore," in the last line. This song is so beautiful it makes me want to cry... it's just pure, raw emotion. I feel terrible for anyone else that ever has to feel this kind of pain. I hope that I'll be able to reconcile with it some day, but I'm not sure if I ever will. I think that's what this song is about. |

| The Avett Brothers – The Greatest Sum Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
As determined and passionate as the message of the song seems to be, "nothing could hold me back from you," some of the lyrics seem like they already feel defeated: "The pit you dug to plant your feet's a far cry from my destiny" She's decided to plant herself somewhere that he doesn't see himself belonging. Ultimately, he says, "nothing can hold me back from you," but there's something sad about his voice that makes me think he is questioning if it's right. "Dark and lonely is the ride the devil always by my side Though no match for what lies between a thought of you, your trust for me" Again... there seems to be something very sad about this. By 'though no match for what lies between,' I think that he is saying that the feelings between them, and their trust in each other - his trust in her that she trusts him, something that should never be taken for granted - is enough to overcome whatever it is that is making him feel dark and lonely. "Though some would say it'd ease our pain we know that it can't be done" Here he admits they are experiencing some sort of pain, but it's still not clear what it is, but others are saying that if they let each other go, that it will ease their pain. Both participants in the relationship know, however, that nothing will ease whatever their pain is. There's certainly more to this song than face value... but I'm not sure what it is. |

| You're talking about the church preserving freedom of expression? What history books have you been reading? | |
| The Swell Season – In These Arms Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I'm not trying to pick a fight, but the swearing is part of the raw emotion of this song that I love. "Asshole" isn't graphically distasteful, but it is graphically artistic; it gives a clear and effective picture of the person he's talking about. But it/Glen still leaves it vague enough so that everyone can relate to. As much as you may dislike it, vulgarity is sometimes part of art. Please don't call for it's censorship. |

| The Avett Brothers – Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Is there a political meaning in this perhaps? | |
| Less Than Jake – Plastic Cup Politics Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Just one more thing; I think this song is also a little bit about how alcohol can bring people and friends together to help each other talk about and try to solve their problems together. Maybe not so much solving their problems, but it gives people an opportunity to relate to each others' problems and perhaps help them feel a little more secure about their insecurities. | |
| Less Than Jake – Plastic Cup Politics Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I think I have to agree with LarsFrederiksen, here. Drinking to find a temporary escape from reality doesn't make someone fake, it makes them human. As humans, we're fallible, and sometimes we need a release from our problems, and sometimes, in our fallibility, we use "plastic" solutions, but I don't think that's so wrong. Maybe alcohol isn't the healthiest or smartest strategy of release, but it works for a lot of people. Maybe it's just me, but I never really got the impression of a "sardonic view" of the party scene from this song. In fact, I got the impression that this song was an ANTHEM to the party scene, and to our fallibility, as humans, to rely on things as alcohol to give us temporary escapes, not a mockery against it. After all, the album is called "Anthem." All of their songs seems to be anthems really, and on this album, they all seem to be anthems for people trying to find a better way of life. Right now, alcohol works for me until I can afford to find my better way of life. |

"I just need one more thing to believe in The one thing that will keep me breathing" 'Nuff said. |

| Less Than Jake – Abandon Ship Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I think this song is about needing a reason to keep going on after life has just put you down time after time. "Give me some religion" "Give me some more tv, make it loud, make believe I'm in desperate need for some company" "Give me some forgiveness and I'll try" "Give me some more music I'll sit and read the lyrics like a bible, a gospel, a sing-a-long" ^One of my favorite lines ever. It's so resoundingly true.^ When you hit rock bottom, you ask yourself "why bother?", but you know you have to keep trying, so you have to look for some reason to keep you going and pushing on. I hope you can find your reason when you get there. |

Totally. I can't tell whether he's still upset and missing her, or if he's mad and mocking her. Then again, maybe he's not sure either. |

| Lucky Boys Confusion – Something To Believe Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think just the line "Holy books, so many flaws, no answers" pretty much sums up this song. The speaker is basically saying that he sees too many flaws in Christianity to put his faith in it, but like all of us, he still wants something to believe in. However, at the end, he suggests that, regardless of our beliefs, we should still be good to each other and give each other respect, which, in the end, is what all religions try to teach anyway. |

| Trocadero – No One Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think this is one of those songs that can be interpreted any way the listener wants to for their particular situation. However, I think the intended meaning of the song is kind of an angsty sarcasm about not being able to find the perfect girl. The singer starts out by asking where the girl for him is, and then talks about all the things people tell him the girl for him will be like; like the way people always say that there's a better, perfect, person out there for you. I think that the reason he says her name is "No one" and that she "lives somewhere not here" is because he's saying that the perfect girl doesn't really exist, and he can't find anyone for him. |

| Muse – Map of the Problematique Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I honestly think that maybe fueledbyramen (first page) had something with the reference to Mars. I haven't quite figured out what that is though, but there are a lot of space references in this album, and Knights of Cydonia even references the "face" formation on Mars' surface known as Cydonia. In the first line of the song, it says that fear and panic are in the air. The names of Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos, can be translated to Fear and Panic. This makes me think that the song is very strongly referencing Mars. I've also been looking around for a lot of information about the word "Problematique" and it appears to be a reference to the "World Problematique", which is a concept developed by the Club of Rome. According the Club of Rome's website it describes the set of the crucial problems – political, social, economic, technological, environmental, psychological and cultural - facing humanity. Perhaps the song is saying something about the theory of colonizing Mars as a soltion to get away from all the destruction we have caused to Earth? |

| Five for Fighting – California Justice Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
No, he's from right outside of Los Angeles. I don't entirely understand what the song is about, but I have at least realized that "barrel" is referring to a breaking wave, as in surfing, not barrel of a gun. I still don't really understand much else though. |

| Rhett Miller – Come Around Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Like most of the great music that's been coming to my attention lately, I heard this song on Scrubs, in the episode, 'My T.C.W.' I think the song really caught my attention because of the situation I've been in lately with the person I love. Songs like this mean so much more to you when you're truly deeply in love with someone, and you realize a lot more of what the writer is talking about. I think this is one of the best songs about love and heartbreak that I've ever heard and it made me discover Rhett Miller, and the great love song writer that he is. It's a shame more people don't know of him. |

When I first heard this I really liked the line that goes, "If you were supposed to watch you're mouth all the time I doubt you're eyes would be above it" But, then I started to realize that this song is a just a big collection of great lines. Cooley is muh hero. |

| Ryan Adams – When the Stars Go Blue Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Tim McGraw also did a cover of this, and it was actually the first version that I heard. Now that I've heard Ryan Adams' version, I love it to death. I just can't get over the amount of emotion he puts into his songs that most artists these days leave behind. But if you haven't heard Tim McGraw's version, I would highly recommend looking into it. It's different, but I honestly think it's nearly just as good as the original. Anyway, I really wish I knew for sure what the meaning behind this song, cause it's just so damn beautiful. |

Yeah, I got the same idea about Titanic too. But I have a feeling the drowning and sinking is more of a metaphorical falling apart. |

| Reba McEntire – The Greatest Man I Never Knew Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| The one thing I really love about Reba, and especially in this song, is that she has so much power and emotion in her voice. Besides just having an amazing voice, she really puts her emotions into her songs. | |

| Marc Broussard – Hope For Me Yet Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I'm not sure if he's saying that, he hopes that she will someday love him, or if he's saying that she loves him, and because of that he's found reason for hope. I'm leaning towards the latter, considering out upbeat the song is, but the line "Baby, if you could love someone like me" still makes me wonder. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Goddamn Lonely Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I really wish that more people listened to DBT and posted on here, because I know I'm really bad at figuring this kind of stuff out. I know there has to be some profound meaning behind this song and I can just hear it in Jason's voice, but I'm not sure what it is... |

| Drive-By Truckers – Feb 14 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song seems to me to be about a boyfriend trying to make up with his girlfriend, who is apparently very mad at him, on St. Valentine's Day. She doesn't really seem to be interested in making up though. | |
| Drive-By Truckers – Space City Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think the first verse, the nararator is talking about the person he loved, saying that she has died, and that he misses her a lot. "I could make sure no dirt ever got on her name Cause looking at that stone wouldn't bring me so much pain" Space City seems to me to be some sort of social gathering place in town that has some sort of space theme, and he's saying that that's the closest anyone is ever gonna get to the moon. I think he figures that would bring him closer to heaven, and therefor closer to the woman that he loves. I think the line, "And somewhere beyond that big white light [the moon] is where my heart is gone," is saying that the person he loved was his heart, and now his heart is broken. Also, I think the line, "And somewhere she's wondering what's taking me so long," is saying that he thinks his love is waiting for him in heaven. This line, with a few others, as well as DBT's recurring use of the theme of suicide, also makes me think that perhaps he is considering suicide in hopes to see her again. I'm not exactly sure what the second verse is saying though. Anyone have any speculations? |
