Actually, the albom "Together" was released May 4th, 2010. The gulf oil spill had happened just about two weeks prior to release. It would be difficult for the New Pornographers to write the song, add it to the album, and then have the CD mass produced in two weeks time. I suspect that it is the video rather than the song itself that is in reference to the gulf oil spill. However, I can see how you would misinterpret what they said on the website/youtube video. |

First of all this is by far my favorite song on the "Black Holes and Revelations" CD. Secondly, while there may be some inkling about love in this song. I believe it is about a soldier being shipped out. This idea is displayed in the first set of lyrics in the song: "Far away This ship is taking me far away Far away from the memories Of the people who care if I live or die" I feel that the reference to starlight in the song is actually about hope....hope that he'll return to all those that really care for him. The lines-- "Our hopes and expectations Black holes and revelations"-- I feel have a double meaning. It can be about the ups and downs of love and how you want it to be beautiful and perfect but realizing that it won't be. However, at the same time it can be about all the feelings a soldier goes through on the way toward the battleground. The hope to win the war...the fear of dying on the battleground...the images and scenes that one sees while actually witnessing something as violent as war first hand. So I guess take the song as you will but that is just how I interpreted the song. |

hmm...maybe the red and white lights signify ambulence lights...aren't they red and white? Personally, I really love this song. The vocals and harmony are great. It's very catchy even though it does have a sad tone. |

I always thought this song was about love. I had interpretted Saint Simon to be a monk or something and thought of Mercy as an actual female. However, what you guys are all saying makes sense when looking at the lyrics. It was nice to think of it as falling into the "darkness" of love but it is good to know what the real meaning of the song is. |
