The Decemberists – I Was Meant for the Stage Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is my personal anthem. It's a little bit hard for me to put into words even though the song sings it very clearly. I'm a high school student. But... I don't pay particular care to any of my classes except for extra curricular ones. Which would be Theatre Company and Production. Basically, I'm screwed because it has consumed my entire being. I don't know what else to do with my life because it's the only thing I'm truly passionate about. I was meant for this. Except... I've listened to my father all these years about picking a good career and being stable. I think perhaps I will continue with theatre but despite all my glorious dreams... I have accepted that I probably will never be as great and successful as I wish to be.

I think the song means exactly that. Even though the speaker feels 'intended for stardom', they have also accepted they won't be life changing for anyone else. After the show is over the audience will just 'resume their callow ways'. In the end, despite their passion, they really weren't that important after all.

Mogwai – Punk Rock: Lyrics 16 years ago
Middle Eastern, Bosco9? More like Canada. : )

I listen to this song every night. Well. The whole album, really. But that's because this song puts me in a state that's hard to describe. Iggy Pop's ramble in that interview is probably one of the most influential speeches I have ever heard. It put to words exactly what I mean to say every time someone speaks to me about the music I love. I don't listen to a lot of punk rock anymore. I did before. But strip away the genre name and apply it elsewhere and I still feel the same way. This album - this song is what really got me into Mogwai.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin – Dead Right Lyrics 16 years ago
"Yeah, your right but you'll be dead right/Yeah, you look alright, but you're dead, right?" is one of my favourite pieces of lyric right now.

It seems to me he's got a girl in his life who he's just casually seeing but he wants something more with. She's not really interested in that though. He's staying around cause he likes her but he sees that if she doesn't choose to be really with him, they'll argue ("collision course") and she'll lose him.

Sunset Rubdown – Winged/Wicked Things Lyrics 16 years ago
Well. I completely agree that it's a song about religion. BobsRevenge is spot on in my opinion.

But personally, I like to think of it as... can you guess? A failed relationship song. Fashioned after one of my own.

It makes me think of the beginning of dating someone. Where you're both looking to the future. Thinking about how great the other is and how much potential you could have together. The smoke looks like all of these fantastic things.

Next, the birds are them when things begin to not look so good. They're struggling to stay in love. Things get 'chaotic' and they're falling apart. They're both to blame though ("Chaos is yours and chaos is mine").

Then finally he admits all that potential was just fantasy. "So I say, "Oh, I see now. It's just smoke."

Elliott Smith – Figure 8 Lyrics 16 years ago
It's funny how the title tracks of both Either/Or and Figure 8 did not make it onto the album itself.

At first I was going to describe the song as 'haunting'. But that has a menacing feel. This song just sort of floats around the room when it's played and then when it fades off the feeling stays. But in a soft, sweet way that only makes you wish to hear it again.

Wilco – We're Just Friends Lyrics 16 years ago
This kind of reminds me of when I was in middle school in a lot of ways. Which is ridiculous cause a beautiful song like this shouldn't be related to something so juvenile.

But uhm. I started hanging out with a friend of mine's older brother and his friends. He was two years older. And at the time that seemed like a very large gap. He was really cute. And I was very awkward at the time.

One of his friends would constantly make jokes about how apparently we were secretly in love cause we had so much stuff in common, I guess. Or something like that. I always relentlessly denied it. My self esteem was low so I mostly thought they were just being mean to me.

He and I actually became bestfriends for awhile. And I eventually did develop feelings for him - two years later. And about that time I found out that those jokes weren't just slander. He had divulged to his friend that he liked me but that guy being the asshole that he is thought it would be funny to razz him about it. I had been rejecting him so harshly for so long he really did just see me as a friend. So I just kept having to say it every time one of those stupid jokes was made.

He and I talked about it much later. I see this song as his point of view.

Architecture in Helsinki – Debbie Lyrics 16 years ago
U4ia was spot on. That's exactly what I think this song is about.

It brings back a lot of memories of a friend I grew up with. We would spend all of our time together. We were extremely mean to each other. But even worse to everyone else. Eventually all our antics destroyed our friendship. But it was one of the highlights of my life while it lasted. I love him more than anything. He and I are on okay terms now. He's like an estranged brother more than a lost friend. We were goofy kids that did a lot of ridiculous things.

Architecture in Helsinki – Lazy (Lazy) Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of my favourite songs off of Places Like This. But my understanding the lyrics is veryyy little. It's very hard to decipher. I have a brief idea of it kind of being about wanting to be with someone, things are really exciting when they're around but you're having trouble actually getting into a relationship with them. Or something. But the whole thing about the 'mean talking beanstalking icy man' doesn't really... fit that. I have no good ideas about this one. Though, it's a really fantastic song to sing along to. Especially in the shower.

Elliott Smith – In the Lost and Found (Honky Bach) Lyrics 18 years ago
He's in love with a girl, obviously. It almost has a childish feeling. It's that beginning love? Where it's all cute and romantic. But she's got to leave him and he's asking her not to. But in the end she does. And to me he's saying that he's alone now but it's okay because he had that perfect love. He's not afraid to die because even though he didn't get to keep it he found what he was looking for.

John Lennon – We're All Water Lyrics 18 years ago
I cannot believe that there are no comments on this.
But that's not the part that really gets me.
It's that this is listed as just a John Lennon song.
What about Yoko Ono?! ugh.
She's so wonderful on this track!
I especially love the last time she asks, "What's the difference?"
She sounds so vulnerable and I think it's the moment where the song's meaning is best conveyed.
The meaning of course is simple; we're all the same when you think about it so what's the point of war?, but it's then that the emotion involved hits you the most.
I love, love, love, love this song.

Gossip – Listen Up! Lyrics 18 years ago
WHY HAS NOBODY COMMENTED! Hahaha!
I love this song so much. : D
I think it's obvious what this song is about.
Some people are untrustworthy while others...just sort of play along with what other people are saying.
Someone will gossip and the other people will just agree for the sake of agreeing.
Things were like that in grade school and they remain that way for the rest of your life.

Here's corrected lyrics:
Ooooh oh ooooh OH! x2
I warned you, you didnt believe me! x3
I warned you, and now you're caught

There's some people that you just cant trust
But some people talk way too much.
Take my advice, and listen up!
Dont be a fool like the rest of us.
Now listen UP!
Ooooooh on the playground! x2
You learn so much now listen up!
Now gather 'round, listen up!
Gather 'round now.
1, 2 ,3 Take it from me,
3, 4 So much trouble in store,
4, 5 Get it right the first time, oh!
Count it with me now!
1, 2 ,3 Listen to me,
3, 4 So much trouble in store
4, 5 Get it right the first time, OH!
Count it with me now!

Ooooh oh ooooh OH!
Everybody knows someone like that,
Who borrows money and wont pay you back.
They'll talk about at the drop of a hyde
Lie about it to your face when they're caught

Theres some people that you just cant trust
But some people just talk too much.
Take my advice, and listen up!
Dont be a fool like the rest of us.
Now listen up!
Oooooh on the playground! x2
You learn so much! now listen up!
Now gather 'round.
Now listen up!
Gather round now!
1, 2 ,3 take it from me,
3, 4 so much trouble in store,
4, 5 get it right, the first time, oh!
Count it with me now!
1, 2 ,3 take it from me,
3, 4 so much trouble in store
4, 5 get it right, the first time, oh!

Islands – Jogging Gorgeous Summer Lyrics 18 years ago
From the Secret Unicorns forum:
Jogging Gorgeous Summer
(originally posted here by Silverdown, edited by CiroccoJones)

Woke up with rain on my head / I can’t dry off so what should I do instead?
Swim to the biggest flower bed / Pick one for you and kiss you my love

So when the storm clouds dissolved into thin air / Like when my hands got lost in your thick hair
Dogs bark, long days, not dark / The sky’s blue so what should we do?
We can do anything we want to

Millions of sunsets but the one I'll remember
Is the one where you told me you’ll love me forever

Took a long walk into the woods / Climbing the world’s biggest tree
And then they tried to cut it down / But we didn’t make a sound
The sun blinded them, they couldn’t see

Woke up next to you in your bed / Another day to do it all again
Creeped out into the sun / Another day to give you all my love

Millions of sunsets but the one I remember
Is the one where you told me you’d love me forever

I kinda think it's about someone that he follows around, doing whatever they tell him to. And what they do isn't exactly right, I think, and he doesn't agree with them but he goes along anyways. Maybe now he's trying to get out?
But don't listen to be. I'm probably way wrong.

Modest Mouse – Dashboard Lyrics 18 years ago
You know what I'd love? If people would stop complaining about/acting like a music snobs and actually talk about what this song may be about. Cause I was hoping to see some intelligent posts.

Anyhow. I figure the meaning to this song is rather simple. He's just saying. Things could've been worse so just get over it. But I was hoping maybe someone had a more indepth analysis. Because my idea is quite disappointing. Cause it's like Brock hasn't really changed much since the last album. Because that's what most of the songs were about. Not saying that Good News was bad. I really liked it. It was catchy and fun. I was just hoping for something a little more from We Were Dead.

I'll admit, Dashboard is not their best. The synth is weirding me out. But it's got potential. Here's hoping the rest of the album is a bit better!

The Raconteurs – Intimate Secretary Lyrics 18 years ago
well. the bit there should be:
"Is this greeting the type that's meant for me?
Are you part of this kakistocracy?"

this doesn't sound right:
"Then on rubble of malarchy
Down with luck we'll see Ecclesiarchy"
There was a St. Malachy. But as far as I know malarchy isn't an actual word.
I tried it on urban dictionary and it defines it as "Something that generates a lot of work or fuss."
Soo...I dunno. Maybe Jack White reads UD. xD
BUT. I don't hear anything like 'malarchy' anyways.
I heard 'obscurest (somethingsomething)'.

And as for the last verse. I've got nothing.
Can't figure it out at alllll.

The Notwist – Solitaire Lyrics 18 years ago
It kinda reminds me of a song I read in the eighth grade.
Can't remember what it was called.
But it was about a society where they were taught never to see differences, they were always polite and honest. It was rather freaky. Everyone was monotone. They didn't have special holidays like Christmas. Love and sexuality was a nonexistant concept. Etc. It was a rather deep book for thirteeyearold kids. Weird stuff.
The Giver. Yeah. That's what it was called.
Anyhow. I doubt this song's concept is anything like that. But that's what it reminds me of.
I like burrowowl's idea, though.

I'm grasping for straws trying to make a meaning of this song. I kinda thought it might be about a girl dating an old dying man for his money. But lots of the lyrics don't seem to fit. So that's not right.

Sufjan Stevens – Super Sexy Woman Lyrics 18 years ago
Such a weird jump from his usual stuff.
I hated this song at first.
It was the first Sufjan song I heard.
I was like, "What is this bullshit?"
I didn't really want to listen to the rest of his music.
BUT, I did. And then the song became better.
Cause then I realised he wasn't just an asshole.

POINT IS. I adore this song now.
It's been extra good lately too.
Cause. After I've cried to Chicago I don't want to switch to listening to someone else but I definetly need to cheer up. So it's Super Sexy Woman everytime.

Teehee. I like that line too.
"Babe, I feel so clean,
Unless she likes it dirty."
I always smirk a little when I hear it.

I really like this song because it's so simple.
To the point, right?
Sometimes I gotta stop listening to pretentious metaphors and just listen to something that's clear. It may not be so heartfelt and deep. But it's just calming to listen to good music that sound make me feel so...weighed down. I listen to depressing music far to often. This song is always good to lighten my mood.

(I like to put it on repeat while I'm doing my laundry. roffle.)

I dunno, I thought the whore sidewalk thing was about taking the relationship -really- serious. That even though she says she wants it to be forever she has to be dedicated to it? You know, she writes it in chalk and that's cute. But if she'd put it in cement it'd really mean something? ...maybe that's cause I've been talking about commitment and such tonight.
