I first heard this song as I was taking a rode trip across the deep south. I bought the album before I left, and by the time I got to this song, I was crossing the Georgia/Florida border late at night, right after it had stopped raining. The smell of wet pavement, the tropical rural landscape, and the stillness of the night are the things that come to mind whenever I listen to this song. |

No responses? This is one of Dylan's best!!!
Anyway, I'm not too sure what it means, but I think it goes along with the themes of isolation and regret found elsewhere on "Time Out of Mind". |

Not my favorite Dylan, but this has got to be the best thing he has ever written. Listening to this while watching the fireworks on the fourth of July makes the song so unbelievable. So inspiring. And he was only 23 when he recorded it. |

This song is one of the few masterpieces that Dylan wrote and recorded in the 80's. Very underrated. |

I think this song is about Dylan's attempts to leave the folk music scene and branch out in his songwriting and musicianship.
Another song on the same album, "My Back Pages", also goes along with this mentality. So does "It Aint Me, Babe".
The girl he's talking to are his fans, and when he say's he doesn't want to have a serious relationship, but only be friends, he's saying to his fans he wants to give up protest ballads and serious topical songs. |
