Bob Dylan – Tangled Up in Blue Lyrics 15 years ago
The only possible way you could describe Dante as "not really romantic poet" is if you haven't read him.

I would also argue against the contention that Dante wrote less exclusively about love than Petrarch. Dante wrote exclusively of love, both towards a woman (Beatrice) and for God. "La Vita Nuova" is dedicated entirely to one woman, Beatrice, who is the same figure of heaven that beckons Virgil to guide Dante through Inferno and Purgatorio, and then herself guides Dante through the spheres of heaven.

Shearwater – Home Life Lyrics 17 years ago
It's about a tomboy who is coming to terms with her gender and roles. "Home Life" refers to a woman's work at home.

In the second stanza, the girl wants to be like the rest of the guys, who are out having fun and doing boyish things in the woods.

The lines "where a tiger lies and, cleaning their weapons, they laugh at his useless claws" refers to the boys' superiority over the tiger.

That the subject should be fixated on the idea of a tiger indicates the passion she has with in her towards living the life of boys.

The last stanza's refer to the subject inheriting her gender roles. It doesn't portray them as burdens, but as obligations with the hope of one day she will be liberated (or be the one to liberate).

The very last stanza is sets of paradoxes that convey the idea that the subject is stuck in one life while wanting another.

The Hold Steady – Citrus Lyrics 19 years ago
it's about the various feelings a person has on the journey to getting wasted. There are places like bars, taverns and dorms where people feel alright and safe. There are good feelings associated with the hook-ups one makes when getting wasted blah blah blha. Then there's the bad feelings like the anxiety of dealing with drug dealers on street corners, to whom your happiness/satisfaction is the least of their concern. perhaps more literally it can be taken as song about alcohol being more wholesome than cocaine, meth or junk.

Pavement – Rattled By The Rush Lyrics 19 years ago
its perhaps the easiest malkmus lyrics to extract meaning from. it's pretty obvious that its about marriage... like how people tell you "don't rush it. its a big committment." "I saw my dad crying" is in reference to being a disappointment by doing something hasty like getting married

TV on the Radio – Staring At The Sun Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with you that it didn't really fit with the episode, at least lyrically. But i don't think the producers even think of the lyrics when it comes to choosing songs. I don't even think they listen past the first 30 seconds of a song when they choose em, so they prolly chose it for its epic intro.

The Dismemberment Plan – 8.5 Minutes Lyrics 19 years ago
"Light may take 8.5 minutes but not an ICBM. Nothing man-made goes that fast, so I dont think they were launched from the sun." Wow. they were launched towards the sun, in an attempt to save it from burning out.

Anyway, it's about the sun going out. You'd talk to a physicist, not an astronomer, if nukes were being launched against the planet itself. 8.5 Minutes is a reference to the last moments of light and heat. "Going underground" means going towards the earths core, where heat remains. The line "dead black disc" is describing light literally disappearing from the sky (think of a blanket slowly being pulled over your eyes).

TV on the Radio – Say You Do Lyrics 19 years ago
i love this song. it's definitely not their most complex, but that's probably why i like it so much. it's just so natural. the whole thing just saunters on at such a lazy and bumbling pace. the first line is so trite and simple, but the way tunde delivers it is so haunting.

Pavement – Stereo Lyrics 19 years ago
in addition to what i said above, the song reminds me of the movie "That Thing You Do." The songs lyrics are almost parallel to what happens in the movie: the boys get signed, they hear themselves on the radio (liv tyler running and all that), they meet famous musicians (Guy getting to play with his drum hero), and things fall apart (the band breaks up... one hit wonders).

i think this song is about being in a band. more specifically, it's about selling out and the danger of letting fame get in the way of protecting yourself and the band.

First, the band is getting signed by a label (most likely a major label). The "pigs" in this case are the label executives who are just trying to sign an indie band (not necesarily pavement themselves, but a band like them). The execs even go so far to say they hate jocks and their girlfriends just to appeal to the band.

Papers are signed (if the signatures are checked) and the band gets its first brush with fame. They start getting press in magazines & tv (wave to the camera), they start playing more shows (nation so depraved
from the cheap seats see us), AND...

... they finally get to hear their band on the radio in the car (take another ride to see me home listen to me! i'm on the stereo).

After a while, they get to know famous people, (what about the voice of geddy lee...
"i know him and he does!")

and then everything goes wrong for the band. The labels out to get them and their fans are getting bored with them. All because they were so caught up in being famous, they didn't read the fine print in the contract (well focus on the quasar in the mist). And in the end, taking the proper precautions against getting fucked by the label would have been common sense. (everybody knows advice that was given out for free. lots of details to discern)

At the Drive-In – Catacombs Lyrics 19 years ago
Judging from the fact that many of ATDI's songs draw inspiration from Edgar Alan Poe, i'd say this song is about Poe's story "The Pit and the Pendulum."

Basically, the story is about a man who is thrown into a dark room and he's going f'n crazy ("what's the sound"). He can't see anything, so he walks around to see what the room is like. Eventually he finds out that there is a deep deep deep pit inside the room (the song references fossils, wombs and tombs). When the man wakes up the next day, he finds himself tied to a torture apparatus. The apparatus is a swinging pendulum ("pendulum swings...", "scalpel's glaze") that is descending slowly down upon its victim ("this gravity..."). The man is given two options: 1. to throw himself into the pit or 2. let the pendulum slice him in half. In the story, he gets free only to realize that the walls are closing in.

And then he is rescued by the army.

At the Drive-In – Ursa Minor Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, i've heard ATDi was influenced by the book "Chocolate War." It's been a while since i've read the book, but from that perspective... it's about a kid's fight against a powerful secret society's at an all boys school.

The first stanza is about getting the holy shit kicked out of you. The first chapter of The Chocolate War opens with a grotesque description of the protagonist getting tackled during football practice. In the last chapter of the Chocolate War, the protagonist gets the his ass kicked for causing such a ruckus against the school and the school's secret society.

The line "while you sleep..." is about how the secret society works at night. In the chocolate war, they do all their mischievous deeds at night (i.e. unscrew the tops of desks to piss off the teacher).

The line "500 times i must not talk out of turn" is a reference to school punishment. In the chocolate war, the secret society and the school administrators work together. The title "The chocolate war" comes from the protagonists disruption of the school's chocolate sale. As a result, the secret society gets the whole school to turn against him and the school's officials don't take much notice to the injustice that is taking place.

"no vents opened" is a reference to the secret society itself and the actual room that they met in.

The last lines of the song are about how ultimately, we aren't in control of our lives. Things may look like they might be alright (permission to land all systems go) but there's always something that goes wrong by chance (propeller snapped). "Inertia kisses those around me" is a reference to the inevitabilty of unjust things that happen to our friends and to ourselves. Leading up to the climax of the "Chocolate War," things are going well for the protagonist and it looks like he might win the fight against the secret society and corrupt teachers. Things take a turn when close friends of the protagonist begin to suffer for the protagonist's insubordination. Eventually, the school turns against the protagonist and the protagonist can do nothing to prevent what happens to him. The book ends on a tragic note and the bad people get away with everything.

Read the book. It's damn good.
