To me it seems rather obvious and is just about the teenage, young adult 18-21 lifestyle. Waking up in the midday sun What's to live for? You could see what I've done Staring at emotion In the light of day I was running from the things that you'd say So this (as well as the chorus) sets the scene for the protagonist as someone who parties hard and wakes up at midday. He's finding himself as all young adults are, and not in the best of ways. There is an authority figure here saying grow up, but he/she is ignoring and just doing their own thing. I was a boy at an open door Why you staring Do you still think that you know? Looking for treasure In the things that you threw Like a magpie I live for glitter, not you This is what really seals the deal for me. As I am completely over the whole clubbing, getting drunk phase, however looking for treasure could not be more true. In the quest to define myself, I have tried about everything there is always looking for the greener grass over the hill, the shiny treasure. An example would be relationships, I've had my fair share and these days I just do multiple open relationships, so for example I live for the ride not the people (or her). Now I'm sitting alone I'm finally looking around Left here on my own I'm gonna hurt myself Maybe losing my mind I'm still wondering why Had to let the world let it bleed me dry This is the sad ending, say 5 years or so has passed, and he never did find himself unfortunately. |

| Bloc Party – Cain Said to Abel Lyrics | 17 years ago |

CourageousInsanity, that is quite a stretch of my interpretation. I've read through Genesis of the bible which neworderking has kindly explained the relevance. The "A Weekend in the City" era that this song is from, as well as "Intimacy" are based around relationships being formed and torn apart. With "A Weekend in the City" being the prelude, and and "Intimacy" being the current conclusion of those tales. That being said, take the verse: "Success has been cruel This year has been hard Falling out of love With the one thing I had loathed" Explains the protagonist of the story falling out of love, with the one thing he desired. The Cain reference to the story explains an abstract character of the story, one that destroys what is good in the world, one that is ruled of jealously and evil. Throughout the end of the song, within the confusion rushed racing flaring words, our protagonist has the realisation that himself and this abstract of Cain are one, that looking at his actions in hindsight he was the sole saboteur of his relationship. |

Manticore416, you hit the nail right on the head :) At first reading of the lyrics I thought that a guy had kidnapped her for 3 months, raped and did terrible things to her, and then the narrator has dug her dead body up to be with her in his insane reality. Well that's the literal meaning, but the metaphor you got head on ;) |

Out of my experience, randoms, sex buddies, gfs, etc, heres my interpretation. Two 'sex buddies' were together, the girl got with someone else, the guy liked the girl more than just a 'sex buddy', and the girl knew that. They are together again, at a party or whatever, and then the girl decides it's a mistake (2nd verse), and the guy rapes her. (Yeh took me a few listens to figure this out, but year it's pretty clear now, well for me it is) The chorus is talking about getting the hearts pumping, fright, sex, etc. |
