| The Thermals – A Pillar of Salt Lyrics

haha i just logged in to write a comment and totally forgot "pillar of salt" was my login name, made up before i'd ever heard the thermals totally a bible reference cause mrs lot is one of my favorite hebrew bible characters (she's also referenced in slaughterhouse five, the narrator loves her because what she did was so "human")
so i loved this song the minute i heard it because yeah, the whole album i think is a criticism of the corruption and hypocrisy of the christian church (given the album title), using biblical stories as metaphors (maybe?) and so christian leaders today are cruel and drunk with power just like god was in cases like this one. "here's your future" is another good example.
but the pillar of salt story is a great one to use for this purpose because mrs lot does one any feeling human being would do, she can't help but see her entire life destroyed, but because god told her not to, she is punished for doing the most natural thing in the world. good parallel to the story of orpheus is the metamorphoses too. yup. |

the outside world doesn't agree with you. you have the potential for self-love, and the potential to appreciate the world and all but the world doesn't want you...not sure of the specifics but there's friction here. it's sad but it's an acknowledgement of something beautiful lalala somethingorother |

hippie anthem or just an anthem for everyone.
"i feel like i'm a cog in something turning"
"got to get ourselves back to the garden"
that could be sentiment of a hippie or a suicide bomber. it's anyone's statement. |

i can't think of a convincing argument that this is not the greatest song ever written. maybe it's not...but if there's a musical experience out there more satisfying than hearing those opening notes and knowing what's coming i have yet to discover it. |

i always saw this song as being about childhood sweethearts and step-siblings. the speaker's father married the other person's mother (hence the "dad" and "your mom" and so the two were thrown together, coming from broken homes, put into another home sort of sewn together, clearly still turbulent. and in the middle of it they find solace in each other. i see it as the mother and father having violent fights in one room, and in the next room the two children who are just victims of it all discovering this sort of juvenile tenderness and intimacy that protects them from the outside world. |

these might be my favorite song lyrics ever, and i love the way his voice soungs singing them and everything. it might be in reference to anne frank but not just about her.
that's the interesting thing about speaking metaphorically about anne frank, anne frank IS a metaphor, or she has become one. she's an innocent human face put on one of history's greatest tragedies.
yeah i never thought about who the little boy was but i assumed it was a reference to reincarnation. and i love the way they put it, it's so matter of fact. great great song. |

it might not even be any particular drug. just drugs, substances in general. they make you float on clouds in some way or another, they all have downsides. a hangover is a good umbrella term for that.
i think this song is about depression. he clearly cares so little about anything, it's like he's just sitting there thinking about how he doesn't give a shit about anything and writing a song about his lack of things to write about, and referencing some of the thoughts he has and temporary solutions to his problems. |

i don't see it so much as the girl adding to his uncertainty as him being with this girl and loving her and knowing that they could have a good life together but being afraid that shit like war and terrorism etc. could fuck it up by destroying the world and killing them both.
i love how human it is that here you have these global issues that involve billions of people and are totally out of everyone's control, and that the future of an entire country could be at stake but as an individual you can't help realizing that another consequence of it is that it could end one specific part of you life that could otherwise be so good. that's how i interpret the chorus. i love this song so much. |

666 is the antichrist number...the antichrist is dark and sad and mysterious...davey havok likes things that are dark and sad and mysterious, and also simple things that have a universal (not to mention cliche) and ominous, meaning...hence his fascination.
i think AFi's pretty predictable, in terms of songs, lyrics, subject matter, mood they'll be in while writing songs, etc. but you gotta love them. i know i do. |

i never thought about the heroin thing but that makes a lot of sense. it's a fundamentally happy song to me, or at least self-affirming. an recovering addict saying it makes sense cause it's like the feeling you've been hurting yourself for a long time and now you're acknowledging that you deserve good things. it's kind of magical to see people realize they need to stop hurting themselves and the song has a magical quality to me. |

no guess as to what this song is about specifically but the tone feels like one of those all-justifying thing. like this and this and this are all wrong in my life but here i'm gonna sing upbeat anyway in this sort of self-depricating ironic sort of way that ultimately helps you feel better...fuck it i don't know how to describe it. |

i was pretty sure it was kurt cobain after the first stanza and then when i heard the rest of the song i think it's definetly him but i think it's her too. when i saw chan perform there was a big delay and she almost didn't come onstage and my friend said she was notorious for missing shows. i don't know why that's true but maybe with this song she's explaining that not only does she really admire and respect kurt but she related to him and doesn't want to fall into the same trap that he did, feeling like she belongs to her audience and owes them something and has to perform even when she doesn't want to. she doesn't want to start hating herself for that so it's like when she says i don't blame you she's also saying i know how you feel. |
