| The National – Bloodbuzz Ohio Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| one layer of the song is about economic decline and the declining middle-class of middle america. but it's also about dying or dead love. i guess in a way economic decline and lost love are interconnected. | |

the "coyote" is Conor's G5 private jet. He is singing about yearning to send the Coyote down to Cancun to pick up his Mexican, swimsuit model girlfriend and bring her back to his place in Pacific Palisades. poor kid. |

"...Asking all the people passing by Doesn't anybody want the way" makes me think of some religious fanatic on the street in New York City shouting verses, as business people pass briskly buy, not listening... ...as they "scuffle with the crowd to get their share, and fall behind their little bits of time." "I say goodbye to Joseph and Maria," intrigues me. Joseph is a Biblical name, and Maria, latin / spanish for Mary... seems to be about an individual who neither wants to be a part of that material world, nor do they want to hide in an orthodox religion, so they are left only to explore and search on their own for some meaning. |

love this song. could never get sick of it. i love the refrain - the ending sequence - meant to mimic some children's song. it fits the theme of the song so well - about someone who falls in love for foolish reasons; childishness in adult relationships. |

| Bright Eyes – Light Pollution Lyrics | 19 years ago |

it's about an idealistic young man who gets pulled into the world of materialism that he has always despised. he becomes lost and confused, falling into a life of shallow pleasure and debauchery. he begins to awaken at the end, seeing how he should liberate himself from the world, rather than try to fight it and give in. unfortunately, he dies at the end before he can really walk an enlightened path. but, at least he sort of awakened into a peace before leaving this world. |

| Elliott Smith – Ballad of Big Nothing Lyrics | 19 years ago |

i agree with the nihilism part. well, with the drug part too. someone mentioned the "parade" reference in an earlier post. elliott uses the parade theme elsewhere on this album; seems to symbolize society and whatever people do to try and hold on to meaning in a seemingly meaningless universe.. so he expresses how drug use can be a viable solution in life, if everything is subjective anyway. on that note, he may be expressing this song with a bit of irony...or maybe not - however you want to interpret it... but, i'd say that Elliott was probably pretty sincere with his pessimistic lyrics.... |
