Radiohead – There There. (The Boney King of Nowhere.) Lyrics 15 years ago
I interpret this as having an environmentalist, or kind of animistic, message, as a lot of Thom's interest has been in people's impact on the environment. The video itself is really Grimm's fairy tale-ish, and the lyrics contain references, like sirens, to ancient mythology. The fairy-tale video, and the lyrics, reference the type of long-held beliefs about nature that it's a force to be reckoned with and that straying from the path, going through the woods will lead you literally "to shipwreck" - like Little Red Riding Hood wandering from the path to pick flowers. The part of the song that begins in the video when Thom sees the glowing vest and shoes is the "Why so green and lonely? / Heaven sent you to me" part. I think that is a reference to contemporary man's view of the world around them, that the natural world is something subject to their dominion. In the video, the guy lost in the woods messes with forces obviously beyond his control and without seeming to stop and wonder if there might be any consequences, and is consumed by them in the end. "We are accidents waiting to happen" - it seems that it's human nature to spread and consume the natural world without regards to the danger, and we'll destroy ourselves in the end if we continue. Seems to fit well with Thom's other environmentalist/global warming messages, that's just my interpretation.

Rilo Kiley – So Long Lyrics 16 years ago
I listened to this song a lot right after a particular relationship I was in ended, I felt that it fit the spirit of the song so closely. What this song brings to my mind is, most succinctly, wistfulness. Wanting something to work out so badly it hurts, but watching as the other person intentionally or inadvertently destroys the relationship through their actions - and seems completely indifferent to it. Lyrics like "after all you touched has finally turned gray" or "in bed for too long" suggests a relationship dying a slow, drawn-out death instead of a quick breakup. Or it might be about someone with whom the singer was in a relationship which ended, and he sees her afterward and doesn't know what to do or say, other than feel pain and regret.
I think the saddest thing is how the song ends: no resolution, and the other person in the relationship hasn't even learned anything from any mistakes they might have made: "waiting for something to finally come around, tell you what you knew - that you weren't wrong". I just can't describe how perfectly this fits the relationship that had just ended when I first heard this song. Listening to it can bring so much buried emotion to the surface...

The Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling Lyrics 16 years ago
You know, a lot of the time I can really enjoy songs with a catchy beat but meaningless lyrics. I'd say most of the time, in fact. Even Boom Boom Pow wasn't completely unbearable. But this... oh god. "Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it, let's do it, and do it, and do it, and do it, and do it, and do it do it do it, lets do it, lets do it, lets do it"? The entire song sounds like it was written by a fifth grader with severe cases of Asperger's and Tourette's. It's worse than just vapid, it's like they were trying to write lyrics that give you a fucking concussion.

Bright Eyes – You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will. Lyrics 17 years ago
Conor Oberst doesn't just make music, he creates art. He's the goddamn Michaelangelo of the musical world. Something this beautiful should be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Bright Eyes – Waste of Paint Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is so incredibly powerful. It sounds like he breaks his guitar strings at the end, I wouldn't be surprised if he had. I'm not easily moved to tears but that verse:

"And try to just keep moving on
With my broken heart and my absent God
And I have no faith but it's all I want
To be loved, and believe
In my soul"

The way he just abandons the melody and screams has something so desperate in it I often can't help but cry.

Bright Eyes – The Calendar Hung Itself . . . Lyrics 17 years ago
This song gave me chills the first time I heard it years and years ago. And it still does so today, especially the last verse...

"Well, the clock’s heart, it hangs inside its open chest
With its hands stretched towards
The calendar hanging itself"

The sense of hopelessness in those lyrics... two inanimate objects, frozen in that tortured, desperate situation, from which there is no possibility of recourse or escape... is nearly palpable. It actually kind of reminds me of some of the relationships I had in my younger years. Heh.

Interesting that both calendars and clocks are used for measuring time, yet in different ways... Conor never really writes something without a deeper meaning to it, so I'm sure there's something there, but I'm sure there are multiple good explanations unless we ask the man himself.

Bright Eyes – Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh Lyrics 17 years ago
This has been one of my favorite songs since.... god, since it came out I guess. My best friend's quote in our Senior yearbook was "something about those bright colors would always make you feel better". Now I've graduated from college and he's left town... this song reminds me of so many of the now transparently superficial stresses and arguments I went through in my younger years, and though I'm now (hopefully) older and wiser I can't think back on them without a certain sense of nostalgia. Conor Oberst is the most brilliant lyricist alive.

Bright Eyes – A Perfect Sonnet Lyrics 17 years ago
I have been awed by the sheer magnitude of Conor Oberst's musical genius since I first heard Commander Venus - and then came Fevers and Mirrors, and Lifted... my god. He is, without exception, the most tortured, talented, wrung-out-by-life-and-left-to-dry songwriter alive today.

The Knife – Pass This On Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is so incredible... it's definitely in my top 10... exactly what it does is hard to explain, it's not necessarily the words or the meaning, but the mood it sets and the emotion it conveys... agh I love music, and this song reminds me why

Coldplay – The Scientist Lyrics 19 years ago
I hadn't heard this song until about a month ago, when my best friend played it for me. It's a song that reminds him of the woman he loves - they dated for over a year, but due to a number of factors and stresses, their relationship dissolved a few months ago. My friend can hardly stand to hear this song anymore, now that the lyrics speak so directly to his situation. In this particular instance, I find myself simply as an observer... yet I've had experiences that were similar, and I can feel the pain that I know they both share.
I find that I can't help but love songs like this. As a fairly methodical and "scientific" person myself, I have often been asked by friends and wondered myself why it is that so many beautiful songs invoke sadness. I see it simply as a byproduct of the human condition: as social animals, we are wired to have empathetic responses elicited by the distress of our families and peers. Now this may seem to be a deviation from "what this song means to [me]"; however I find this necessary to state because I, as a listener, tend to follow this view by rendering songs down to their most basic, humanistic elements. To me, this song is simply regret given voice and a bass line. Regret for decisions made, for things not done, for the calculating way in which life was (or is) lived. In reading the opinions on this board, I agree that this song has many possible interpretations regardless of original intent; it could be about a death or unrequited love as much as a breakup.
On a side node addressing the last poster, Kool, as a personal view I find it perfectly acceptable for people to share their personal stories on this forum. Perhaps at 13 I also lacked the patience and the empathy to tolerate that to which I could not relate; however the adult world demands that we are not so quick to voice our dislike of other's actions and habits, particularly when those have no bearing whatsoever on our individual lives.
