| The Mars Volta – Son et Lumière Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| It's about Cerpin Taxt, or Julio Venegas. Has anyone noticed that Cerpin Taxt sounds exactly like Serpent Axed? Serpent symbolizing evil, and so Julio Venegas being a representation of the fight for evil, and goodness in general. Cerpin is also an anagram for Prince, so it can also mean Prince Taxed, or "Strained Prince." Thanks to the comatorium website for the last interpretation. | |

The song is about a breakup, but my interpretation doesn't involve drugs: Stanza 1: Before you slip into unconsciousness I'd like to have another kiss Another flashing chance at bliss Another kiss, another kiss Stanza 1 talks about his lover either dying or becoming physically unconscious (over-intoxicated, coma?). The first line can also mean that she'll be going into his unconsciouness, meaning that she'll be forgotten (I'll explain later). It also talks shows his desperation to still be with his lover, and that she's his source of bliss. Stanza 2: The days are bright and filled with pain Enclose me in your gentle rain The time you ran was too insane We'll meet again, we'll meet again The first 2 lines of Stanza 2 talk about the contrast of the bright and sunny weather with the pain inside Jim (assuming that he was talking about himself in the song), and how he wants it to rain in order to show how he feels. "The time you ran...", shows that his girlfriend has left him before, but came back, and left him going crazy and missing her. Stanza 3: Oh tell me where your freedom lies The streets are fields that never die Deliver me from reasons why You'd rather cry, I'd rather fly She's breaking up with him in order to be "free", and her "freedom" is found on "the streets", where she can have all kinds of relationships with many different men instead of the one reliable one with Jim. "The streets are fields that never die" - saying that those relationships lead nowhere, are aimless. He's asking her to tell him the reasons why she'd rather go for aimless relationships instead of being in a strong one with him. He'd rather fly, meaning he'd rather be with her. Stanza 4: The crystal ship is being filled A thousand girls, a thousand thrills A million ways to spend your time When we get back, I'll drop a line On the most basic level, a crystal ship would sink. So his crystal ship, or his love life, is now being filled with a lot of girls and sex, promiscuity. They'll all sink together in the crystal ship, because those relationships lead to nowhere. I couldn't quite get the last line though, maybe he's saying that he'll contact his lover once again one day, or maybe the drug reference (cocaine) is the correct one. |
